Noob overclocking

I am thinking of overclocking my 3.06ghz Prescott p4 whilst I save up for an e6600, and was wondering if this is possible or not? I read the overclocking guides but I am still at a loss about how to overclock my CPU.

Could anyone help me out? What is a safe speed to overclock to? And is it even possible with my processor?

I essentially want my processor to be at a good standard for a couple of months till I get the cash (student). It's OK now, but I want to try out overclocking before I get my 6600.

thanks in advance

Full spec please :)

P4 prescott should be really easy to clock, 3.06Ghz suggests it's a 533FSB version with stupidly high multiplyer so is even easier to clock.

It's usually just a matter of raising the fsb, stock settings for your CPU is 133.33*23 = 3066Mhz, so if you raise fsb to 166.66 your cpu will be running at 3833Mhz.

one more question...

How do I actually overclock it? :p

Also, would my processor last a good while at that speed? I don't want it dying on me :p

Yes as long as you don't put it through stupidly high voltage it will be fine, Prescott was designed for high Ghz but never made it cuz of heat. so make sure you at least have a decent aftermarket air cooler.

Prescott's default voltage is 1.25 - 1.4V so I wouldn't go over 1.5V without very good cooling.

Freezer 7 pro being the minimum, scythe ninja or tuniq tower are the most popular around here.

my heatsink

is that adequate?

And finally, how do I actually overclock... sorry for being such a noob :(

And it's worth mentioning that my CPU runs ar 34c idle and 44c on full load, eg. Company of Heroes, without having oc'ed.

Don't see anything wrong with that heatsink tbh, though they do sell the same one in ** World, that's not where you got it form is it?? :D

I think we need to know what your motherboard is to determine whether it offers any oc options at all.

Assume that it does, you have to press DEL at start up and the BIOS setup page will come up, you will have to refer to your mobo manual to see where the OC options are.

Asrock Dual-VSTA 775

Pretty decent, i'll look through it later.

OK I can oc BUT I have a problem.

My BIOS say that my cpu is running at 51c (!!!!!!)
speedfan and other temperature monitors say 35c.

which one should I go by?

I'd believe the BIOS. However 51C is not bad for P4, but of course lower temp is no doubt better.

Asrock Dual VSTA is enough to oc your P4 because yours has very high multi as said. But it is no where near good enough when it comes to oc a C2D just so you know.

I'd increase your FSB 5Mhz at a time till it becomes unstable, then try 1Mhz FSB increase at a time. Is there any voltage settings on your mobo??

I don't think I will bother oc'ing the C2D when I get it. 51c seems really high though, especially as it will be even higher when I am oc'ing...
suggestions?
