Noob: PCI-E connectors

Can a 6 pin PCI-E connector be used on a corresponding 8 pin slot or do you nee d a special converter of some kind?

I.E can the 6 pin graphics card I have connect to the 8 pin power supply?

You can plug a 6 pin into an 8 pin (the additional 2 pins are grounds I believe). Occasionally a card needs the additional pins before it'll boot/features become active but the 6 pin is usually fine.
