Hey guys new to the forum so hi :) Took me a while registering with the security questions! I have built a couple computers from scratch in the past but I have a Acer Aspire M3641 and I can't find a option in the bios to overclock ??
I can't find out which mother board I have but it is all standard and im just hoping somebody can give me a heads up how I can overclock..
Stock cooler and case but Speedfan tells me my temps are now
Core 0 - 33
Core 1 - 33
Core 2 - 29
Core 3 - 32
And I have had it on all day, I dont really play games just looking to get the most out of it for now. Im a total noob with overclocking I have never been able to understand it and now im just wanting to give it a go. :D

Hello and welcome to the forum :)

Being a OEM machine, the BIOS would have been locked to to stop any possible overclocking taking place, also the boards are built by main manufacturers like Asus and Gigabyte but the model will not appear on their websites.

There are programs which you can run from within Windows but I found in the past these offer very limiting overclocking and can make your machine crash whilst adjustments are made. whether newer program's are bette I can't say, also I can't remember the name :(

Welcome aboard!

What other components are in the machine? I'm assuming the CPU is a Q6600. What is the graphics card, RAM, PSU...?

If you want to get into overclocking, it may be nice and handy to replace the motherboard and maybe the RAM and away you go! Some very decent cheap boards available.

Nice and handy, really? He'll have to reinstall his entire OS and all his programs. :\

Only option if he wants to get into overclocking

In regards to RJC mentioning that program, its SetFSB, or was when I used it before. As said though its really not a solution

I don't think replacing the motherboard requires a fresh OS install. You will have to update some drivers, though.

Even so, a clean install from boot shouldn't take more than an hour - well worth the effort! Think of it as colonic irrigation for your PC.

OP, let us know the specs of the rest of your kit.

EDIT: Depends on the mobo and OS. Personally, I would do a fresh OS install. It's a hassle, but a useful thing to know how to do.

Everything is standard to when I bought it, i was thinking about getting a graphics card like a 9800gt because im currently on onboard graphics ( Name NVIDIA GeForce 7100 / NVIDIA nForce 630i ) I dont do a lot of gaming but would the 9800gt help me run blackops at decent settings?

You have a G0 stepping CPU at least, they overclock better than the B3 ones, so that's a start. You will need to replace your motherboard before any overclocking can even begin. A CPU cooler upgrade is a must too, they get hot when you start overclocking them.

sorry what do you mean a go stepping cpu?? And i believe my case (standard) is micro atx so it will be a micro board what I have now?? can you get decent micro mother boards or are full size boards better because I want to be able to be able to fit it in the standard case for the time being as money is a little tight... any chance anyone could recommend a decent board? cheers

There there two main types of the Q6600 made, the G0 and the B3, you have the G0 which is great for overclocking, that's all you need to worry about there :)

Get the side off your case and take a picture of the whole thing, and also of the sticker on the power supply, that should help us advise you further.

Yes! this is pretty much what i wanted to do (overclock my Q6600) but i think because mine came with a Dell XPS 720 (although model doesn't really matter) it might be locked, and i have no idea how to unlock it (if it is locked)...
