ok just picked up a laptop from a friend it, had a 256 chip in there which is pc2 4200, i had a spare 5300 1 gig chip which i put in and it runs nicely, i have since found another 512 stick of 4200. will that work ok if i add it? or will the speeds cause issues and i be better off on the 1gig

Prob work but will run all mem at the speed of the slowest so depending on your usage you might be better off sticking to the 1gig. Try it and see.

well it works and so on with the 1gig 5300 and the 512 4200, i would think it runs at 4200 which for a old xp laptop is prob fine, not really got time to test as giving it back tonight just wondering in this case which is best. 1gig of 5300 or 1.5 of mixed

may as well stick with the 1.5gig since it's a runner. Besides the speed difference is only gonna be tiny and prob not even noticeable given that it's a laptop.

No worries. Most of the users at work have lappies (mining engineers who virtually live in eastern europe!) You wouldn't believe some of the odds and mismatched sods they've got in there!:D:D
