Hi guys,

I've been reading this article on turning your not so old computer into a network streaming video recorder using MythTV. But i have a question that i cant seem to find a direct answer just by googling.

Heres my question, say you have two pc ( PC1 & PC2 ) PC1 has ubuntu and mythTV and is the one who will be acting as a server? not sure if im using the right terminology here. And PC2 on the other hand is running windows. Can PC2 still access the recordings on PC1? also i supposed you can watch live TV on PC1, but can you also watch live TV on PC2 and possibly PC3 if any?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Pc1, the server should run Mythbuntu. There is a Windows client but it sucks. Dual boot? You can watch live on any machine, depending on bandwidth on the LAN and number of tuners installed on the backend.

thanks for replying.

so are you saying i wont be able to connect my windows machine on them? im planning on getting ( if this plan is achievable ) tv card with dual tuner on them, and of course i will be using a gigabit lan for this to make sure that there is enough bandwidth for them.

I was told that MythBuntu is buggy?

Anyone else has managed to achieve this here?

Thanks.

You can connect, it's just not nearly as good as a native client. It's a little fiddly. If it comes down to it you can try the Windows client or even the Mythbuntu Live CD. With my tuner, a PVR150, I can run about 5 frontends at the same time on a 100 mbit network. With one tuner, obviously, you can watch one channel, unless you're on satellite in which case special rules apply. Theoretically multiple frontends can watch the same channel simultaneously. However, the number of clients watching pre-recorded content is limited to the disk I/O speed and the network. Gbit E is plenty.

I run Myth on a separate backend and a diskless frontend. Many people choose to put Myth on a split frontend/backend HTPC. That's just fine. You can make that primary then have other clients as needed.

I tried Mythbuntu and found it very clunky and buggy. I was trying to setup diskless clients using LTSP.

Found Gentoo far easier to netboot from and install all the drivers needed for a HD frontend.

The Gentoo documentation is excellent and it is nothing to fear.

Once again thanks for replying.

You said front end(s) can watch thesame channel simultaneously. Does this mean that whatever channel is being watched on PC1 is the only available channel on PC2 if watching live TV? Or will PC2, PC3 etc will have an option to watch other channels independently? This is if you have dual tv tuners.

Thanks again in advance!

If you have dual tuners you can watch two different shows at the same time (or record one channel and watch another, etc.). I don't know if you can have multiple clients watching the same live stream. I've never tried.

There's some trickery available when using a DVB card that can let you watch/record on two channels at once using only one tuner as long as the two channels were on the same multiplex.
