Noob question on AMD 144 overclocking capabilities and pedigree.

I'm new to all this, rarely finish a crossword and the likes. Please can someone shed some light on my predicament?
I've rushed out (carefully researched) and bought loads of goodies (pc bits) to the tune of £1,500.
I've bought an Opty 144 thinking I can become an overclocking guru...
Guess what?
I've just accused myself of not doing my homework as it's arrived with a CAGE ref (not cacje, cabne etc).
I've looked all over the tinterweb to see what on earth this chip is capable of... NOTHING. Not a sausage.

Can anyone help?
Has any one seen this one before? Should I bin it and get a 146? If so which is the stepping to look out for?

the best stepping Opty 146 are the CABYE 0540's
The only way to know how a cpu clocks is to clock it!

Just try it. Information about steppings and overclocking can only be taken with a grain of salt anyway because even with the so-called great overclocking steppings, there can be some turkeys.

You could have a legendary chip there or it could be crap. Just give it a shot.

Are you sure your not just reading the wrong part of the CPU for the stepping?
Any chance of some pics to confirm its a CAGE??

only steppings i've heard of are

CABNE
CABYE
CAB2E
CABGE

Both the very early CABNE or CABYE 0540 are the best opty 146 clockers.

Fact.

Nearly all CABYE 0540's will do 3ghz on air.

with the CABGE steppings being the worst.

It says its bin loc is: s07E (CAGE)
Have I a prehistoric chip here, I dunno. I'm dying to find out what it'll do though. All my other bits arrive today...

erm 0428??? Is it a socket 939 chip youve got? With a manufacture date like that it sounds like a socket 940.

It is a 940. Is that a show stopper as far as overclocking goes? I can feel an RMA coming on.

the new 3700+'s seem to be doing ok... might be worth a look if you cant find one you want.

Hmm. Another tree to bark up. I've just bought the DFI Expert and 2gig of mushkin redline... Will I be able to kick a 3700 and get similar results to the Opty?
