Hey, I purchased a car on Saturday which came with private plates attached. The previous owner told me that the process for having the private number plates removed were in progress.

A couple of days later he told me had a confirmation letter from the DVLA that the private number plate had been removed from there system for the car. He told me the new number plate number. I have since had the number plate made and put the new plates on the car today. I have just got off the phone with my insurance and informed them of the change of registration.

However i'm now wondering how i go about taxing the car. I only currently have the V5c/2 which has the old private number plate on? Am i going to have to wait for the V5 to be delivered?

After a quick google it seems that he should have had this all sorted before selling the car... am i now buggered or what? :o

Hmm I'm pretty sure your supposed to remove the private plates and change the V5 BEFORE selling the car?

This was the last message I received yesterday.

. hi
I will be sending you the v5c doc with the correct reg mark on it today as the log book has turned up. I will leave it 48 hours before I sorn the car to give you chance to receive the letter.

Why's he SORNing the car? Why did the v5 go to him when you had already sent off the v5 for the old reg in your name? So many questions, this all sounds really strange

I think that he started the process in removing the private number plate from the car before he sold the car to me.

This process has now gone through so he has received a new V5 with the new number plate on. I'm guessing he has signed it and is sending it to me to sign and to take the V5C/2 off this V5 and for me to then post the V5. Will this supersede the other V5 Document i have the V5c/2 for when i purchased the car?

Its all one big cluster**** and i wont be buying a car again with a private number plate. :( .

Yep. Was really quick last time I done it. I have just assigned a plate to a car recently too, and despite not being able to do it online for some reason, it was still a much quicker process than it used to be.

Not strange at all.

When you use the online service to remove the plate from the car, the car is still registered to the original registered keeper (RK) and not the new one.

The original RK will then receive:
  • New V5 with "normal" reg number on it
  • Retention Certificate for their private plate

The original RK will then fill out and complete the V5 and send to the DVLA notifying them that there is a change of RK and SHOULD supply the new RK with the V5C/2 (green slip) so that they can tax it using this (can be done online)

After a few weeks, the new RK will receive a new V5 in their name

Well i received a new V5c/2 in the post today and got the car taxed at the post office. Had to fill out a V62 form as its tax class was Disabled and needed changing to petrol car.
