Noob question on temps? How hot is too hot?

As above, total noob but might dip my toe in and have a little dabble with overclocking my.

I'm currently std, i5-760, @2.8Ghz (is this potentially good for clocking)

So temp wise what should I be looking out for aiming at?

Hey

Try and keep the temps under 75C for daily use, some people allow slightly higher temps while stress/stability testing as it doesn't reflect real world use most of the time (some exceptions, like rendering for hours ETC..).

temps lower than 80.C
max vcore (cpu voltage) is 1.4v with LLC off.

what motherboard, ram and cpu cooler have u got?
as these will have a big impact on how high u get to overclock the cpu.

here is a decent beginners guide to overclocking, read it and any others u find,
then at least when u overclock, or get settings from someone else, u understand what u are doing.

Cheers for the link. I fully intend to spend some time reading up on it. first and foremost I simply cannot afford to trash it or cook it and start again.

System is as follows
Gigabyte GA-55P-USB3 (Rev 2.0) BIOS @ F9
LGA1156, i5-760 @2.8 Std (Lynnfield)
Gelid Tranquillo
8Gig Corsair XMS3 DDR PC3-12800C9 (1600Mhz)
Corsair GX-750W

Samsung 840, 250Gig (Non Pro)
Samsung 1TB F3
Gigabyte HD6850

Just been looking at the temp and system monitoring apps (there are a lot.. LOL) Any recommendations on best of the bunch?

i use realtemp or core temp for monitoring temps.
cpu-z is the best imo for system specs.

u will be fine, the only thing that can really kill a cpu is excessive volts.
just take your time, u should be easily able to get around 3.8ghz or higher with that setup.
like i said just do your home work first and take your time

you could try going for 3.8ghz with setting the cpu voltage to normal in cpu voltage list

idk the max multi on that chip i had the 920

could try 20x190=3.8ghz
disable intel turbo boost
set spd system memory multiplier to 8x which would give you 1520 mhz ram speed
set qpi/vtt to 1.31v
set uncore frequency to 17x
set dram voltage according to your memory usually 1.5v or 1.66v
set system performance enhance to standard

You're a star, thanks for the heads up. It will probably be next weekend before I get chance to have a play. Plus I want to read up some more first.

Wazza's post is pretty much spot on. I overclocked my 930 and found my QPI needed to be higher than 1.31. This should only be an issue if you have 1.65v ram though from what I was reading. I had trouble getting the bus to 190 with my board though, wouldn't handle anything over 180. (Asus P6T-SE)

try reading up on dvid,it works the same way the graphics cards work as in using full power/speed at load, and less than 1v lower speeds at idle

by setting the cpu v to normal it unlocks dvid for adjustment, whatever you set in dvid gets applied to the stock normal cpu voltage

so stock cpu v is 1.25v and you need 1.3v to be stable at 3.8ghz youd set dvid to +0.0500v = 1.3v and so on,its more accurate than auto and allows cpu to downclock unlike using a fixed voltage

@Simple steve has your board been ok since?

It's been flawless mate! Can't thank you enough, was about to fork out for a new rig coz i thought it was dying. Looking through the new equipment has given me an urge to get one anyways, but I can take my time and pick out good deals over the next few months now. Gonna make the leap to sandy bridge and take advantage of those PCIe speeds :D
