Noob question, on an MSI r9 290 there's the 8 pin and 6 pin power connectors. I have an EVGA nex650g power supply and one of the cables that comes with it has both and 8 pin and 6 pin connector on it, can i just use this cable to plug into both on the card or should i use one cable for the 8 pin and another for the 6 pin?

Cheers, with the power supply having 4 cables saying VGA does that mean it would run 4 GFX cards? I was under the impression you'd need a hell of a lot bigger power supply for that?

In theory yes, lower end cards, but most will need to connections.

Your PSU should be able to run two R9 280 cards, you might get away with a 2nd 290. A lot of people over estimate how much power a system uses.

But it seems strange that they would supply a cable that can do one card from one cable and then supply 3 others.

Not forgetting this is a quad-rail psu (20 Amp each). I'd recommend using 2 seperate cables. Try one by all means, but if you get power problems you have an idea what to try next ;)
