Sorry if this has been answered before guys, had a look round the board and couldnt see the answer.

I've decided to jump from AGP to pcie at last. Im going for either a A64 4000+ cpu or dual core and have pretty much decided on x1900 xt as the graphics card (AA+HDR being the deciding factor really).

Ive got 2 questions:

1. I guess its ok to buy a standard x1900 xt now and then at some later stage I can buy a crossfire edition x1900 to add to the system?

2. I guess I have to buy a crossfire motherboard? (and presumably these work fine with just 1 graphics card initially)

TIA

yeap

yeap.....go for the dfi crossfire mobo I believe these mobos offer more stability and better performance...

Although regarding your first question I dont think you need to buy a crossfire edition x1900 xt basically 2x x1900xt = crossfire.....

Ah so does the crossfire motherboard essentially negate the need for a specific crossfire edition graphics card to achieve SLI?

i think at the moment you need one crossfire master card and a normal X1900XT. you can mix brands but not types i dont think. there was talk of being able to run 2 slave cards in crossfire but im not sure if thats happening or not.

Yes you need a Crossfire motherboard (see sig) no-one has tested two 1900XT slave cards, so I think it would be safe to say you'll need a master and slave. You don't want to buy two standard X1900XT and find Crossfire doesn't work.

X1900XT Masters haven't dropped down in price yet :( although I would leave it a while for drivers to mature.

Yes you need the master card, it has the compositing chip and crossover cable that allows the output of both gpus to be stitched togther.
