Hi folks,
I'm new to VR. I just got my first headset. Quest 2.
I have a lot to learn. Using a link lead which Oculus app test scores around 1.6gbs.

I've only really tried two games so far. Project Cars 2 and Assetto Corsa. The graphics quality I get is, to my eyes, quite disappointing.
Straight out of the box, the gameplay runs smooth enough for me but the images seem quite blurry in my view. Pixelated and shimmering.
I'm not expecting HD quality but I struggle to believe its as good as it should be.

I've tried a couple of alternate graphics settings suggested as "perfect" for Project Cars 2 but failed to see any (if any!) Significant improvement.

Is this image quality fairly typical, of current VR technology at present? Perhaps I was expecting too much.

Torso:). Iike it. , but I might have to consider selling my body given the current prices.

Perhaps if I sold my rx 590 I could put the funds towards a newer card. Even the rx 590 is getting silly prices on auction sites.

So what would be a reasonable card to buy? I'm not really up to speed with the current graphics card range at present.
Midrange would have to do. But subjectively 1.5 to 2 times better than the rx 590?
Any suggestions? Any bargains anywhere out there?

Like I said, your best bet would be to wait on what offer OCUK have next I suspect. No idea what it'll be, or even if it'll happen, but it'll be a new card at close to msrp with a proper warranty etc. Or, you can watch notifications for Founders Edition cards, since they have a fixed price, and hope that you get in the queue quick enough.

EDIT - You'll still be looking at £400+ (most likely plus plus), but after selling the 590 it'll sting less.

Well, in the current climate I think £400 plus for a card isn't too bad at all. (relatively speaking). I'd be flogging my 590 and topping it up with around £250 to get another card.
I'll keep my eye out for a members deal. I've just taken a quick look over there and it seems they do offer some tempting deals at times.

Thanks.

Update:
Your all bang on the buck. My graphics card is a wimp!
I set all my graphics settings to lowest possible in PC2 and AC. The image was actually better than before when I had them on medium(ish) settings.
Very playable. I was pleasantly surprised to find the image was quite acceptable.
But now you got me all jonesing for a new card. :)

Thank you.

:)
I've cocked it up:) lol.

@danoliver, Fiddled with supersampling in oculus debug (Or was it Tray Tool? or both? Can't remember) Didn't see much difference in image. It was as good as my recent efforts.

Then reset SS to 0 again (I think)

@melmac, Installed Virtual Desktop. Been meaning to give that a try since I got the Quest 2. That looks like a nice reasonably friendly interface. Much simpler and neater than ALVR which I had been experimenting with previously.

Anyhow, ran PC2. Got a terrible picture. Really p**s poor. I must've messed up some setting or other. Half my fun is tweaking and discovering the do's and don'ts with technical toys anyway.

I'll give it a go tomorrow night when I have time to tinker.

Did you get anywhere with this bud?

I've been playing project cars 2 for some months now and notice that visual/performance differs drastically from day to day.

Had it running pretty decent before oculus messed up the USB speeds with one of their previous updates so I had to lower all the performance settings to get it running at a decent rate. They then resolved the USB speeds and I was back at 2/2.3 mps so figured I'd be able to crank the graphics back up but nope, wasn't happening.

I've tried every VR graphical guide out there and I'm just not having any luck, do find that I can ramp the steam supersampling up a little more than I can the oculus one when running with SteamVR.

Hi,

Being a complete noob and a bit thick, I eventually found out that a lot of the blurriness I was referring to is actually called Screen door effect. D'uh! (Old fart =slow learner :). So it seems, to me anyway, that this is just the state of technology at the Quest 2 price point right now. I imagine other, more expensive headsets may have less of this effect.

Sure, my graphics card struggles to give me the graphics quality i'd like but I don't really notice much of the scenery when racing. It is quite acceptable. The cars appear fine. The performance/frame rate is decent enough. No glitches or noticeable frame drops that I can see. Yes I'd like a better card but given the state of the market right now, it doesn't look like I'll be splashing out on a new card soon. (I'm still looking though. Incredible to see there are people on well known auction sites actually paying £650 for a second hand 1080TI. No warranty and unknown history of a card? Not for me, too big a gamble.

As for performance, my RX 590 seems ok. I can even put supersampling up to 2.0 (Although I haven't played it much at 2.0) without any great performance drop.
If that seems odd, given my set up, then I'm probably doing something wrong and my mistakes are cancelling each other out :)

I might add, I got myself a second hand Oculus Go. Using Virtual Desktop I set it up for PCVR. In my opinion, on PCVR I get almost as good an image on the Go as on the Quest 2. Ymmv.

Project cars seems decent on medium settings. Automobilista 2 seems to be way better than PC2 graphics wise on my setup.

I have read somewhere about how the supersampling in-game doesn't work when using steamVR (I think).

The same guy also recommend playing with steamVR and setting your global resolution up to 150% and then dropping it down specifically for PC2 in the "per application" settings.

How is Automoblista 2? Does it implement VR properly?

I've been playing quite a lot of AC mainly in the open wheelers and the graphics look so smooth and sharp part of me thinks it just raised the expectations of PC2 for when I went back to it after oculus solved the usb speeds.

Upping the global resolution and dropping it down? I'll give it a go.
It'd be nice if that offers some increase in picture quality. I won't expect too much of a difference though. RX 590. Can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear.

Automobilista 2 doesn't have a problem implementing VR as far as I can see. It's fine. I have no issues with it.
I'm just a beginner with VR though so don't take my word for it. I could well be overlooking something the more learned among us would notice.
Anyone else play Automobilista 2? Have you any issues with implementing VR?

Great tips here, zero71. Thank you for that.
I actually sold my Quest 2 last week and got a Rift S just to see if there was much difference. There's not. But then again my RX 590 must be the limiting factor.
I've got a used 3060 GPU arriving in the next couple of weeks. I hope to see some improvement. Probably modest ones though.
I'll try those tips when I get it.

I may get myself another Quest 2 in the future. I'm now suspecting my less than great impression of the Quest 2 was down to a very low end VR gpu and my lack of understanding of the settings. There are so many possible options (and pitfalls) it can get a bit bewildering.

And I agree about AMS2. It does seem to be a better image quality than most, without tweaking. That and PC2.

Now, if only I could find time to play the games instead of tinkering with the settings.
