I have Skype installed on my Macbook and what seems like every other day it wants to download and update. So, the new update is downloaded to the desktop, I double click on it and drag the Skype icon into the Applications folder. Correct so far?

But I still have the DMG on the desktop. How do I get rid of this without uninstalling the application? i.e dragging it to the Trash.

To install Skype and most apps...

1. Open the DMG
2. Now open the mounted DMG icon from the Desktop
3. Drag and drop the file to the Applications folder
4. Eject the mounted DMG icon by dragging to the Trash
5. Drag the DMG file to the trash

Optionally: Drag the app to the Dock to keep it visible all the time.

6. Launch the app from the Applications folder

All the you have to do to get rid of the DMG file is right click and eject - and job's a good 'un. ;)

Then if you don't want to have the original DMG which you downloaded you can find it in your Downloads folder or where ever you save too and move to trash. :o

While we're on the subject of installing apps. I installed Google Chrome by opening the DMG and dragging the icon to Applications. Chrome works fine but the icon in Applications is a horrible grey thing with a white 'no smoking' type sign through it.

Why is this?

That happens if your system thinks the file cannot be opened, however it also happens when the file is actually on a DMG or has come from a DMG and has to ask you a question before launching either:

Are you sure you want to open this application downloaded from website 'x'...

=OR=

Are you sure you want to open this application from a read only disk image...

In the first case it should go away after opening the app once then rebooting/logging out.

In the later case you have accidentally added the App to the Dock from the DMG file.
