hello i have a noobie question.

this is what id like to do, but sadly have no idea where i need to start.

i would like to be able to have a pc/server on 24/7 an be able to access its files at home on my laptop, and remotely when im away from home.

the files will mainly be documents an some images

where do i begin any help much appreciated :)

I'd just get a NAS if I were you, and install FreeNAS on it. Once you've done that, you can setup a web server which you could use to authenticate against (or you could provide anonymous access, but I'd advise against that) to access your files remotely.

Do you feel you would like to play around/need more in the future? If so I'd go for the up microserver. The running costs are minimal really. And it gives you good scope if you want more than a conventional nas box. You can even turn It in to a htpc. Excellent little server And the processor is good!

My micoserver with the OS on SSD and 5x2Tb drives only uses <25W when the drives have spun down, only takes a few seconds for a drive to spin up when required.

Really loving the microserver
