My insurance is due for renewal next week
I'm with Elephant and it will be my first year driving and no claims

What's the usual process?

Auto renew , get ripped off?
Phone Elephant or get a quote online
get a quote off another insurer
If I go with another insurer do I need to inform Elephant before the current expiry date?

Anything I should be aware of?

Most insurers will auto renew so you must cancel if your not renewing.

Try the usual comparison sites.

You may find that some online places are crap if you need to claim.
Personally my car isn't worth much and I'm not expecting to crash so I go with the cheapest.

Adding a female driver often drops the price.
Mum, sister girlfriend.
My sister was insured on my car for years, she never drove it.
Worth playing with excess values as well.

Just checked my account and Elephant have started an auto renew process, the FAQ says I should have been informed 2 weeks ago, I wasn't , I've checked my email and spam box

Anyways I can still cancel it and I'm a bit annoyed that with a years driving and no claims under my belt the premium is now substantially higher than last years, like 20% higher
Competitors are nearly half the price, is this a standard practice to try sting customers like that?

Yes. I've found a few times that it's cheaper to take a new policy with the same insurer than to take the renewal price they're offering.

Don't forget the likes of TopCashBack either, can sometimes save a bit more money with that.

Give them a ring to cancel because you can find it cheaper with a competitor or even with the same company with a new quote. Everytime they've then scrapped the renewal price and matched the new price to keep my business. Sorted.

Isn't this Insurance Fraud? If you had a crash and they investigated you, I would think the consequences would out play the little extra saved monthly. ALWAYS put the correct info when searching, they can see this and WILL question you if you take out insurance, they did with me when I used Tesco, they saw I was using different occupations and years experience to see what the prices are.

Don't front, it's Fraud and makes us pay more.

Try Tesco if you are over 25 they are always the cheapest for me, go compare is a doddle to use!

You can add anyone as a named driver, even if they never drive it. My mums still a named driver on my car, bring the price down by a few hundred and she probably drives it once a year. It's not fronting unless they're a main driver.

+1 to adding a female / older driver. Had my mum and dad as names drivers and reduced my insurance a nice chunk :)

I've also notice this year my renewal quote is about 200£ more than I paid last year. Absolute bs. Went on meerkat comparison and the cheapest with zero excess is almost half the renewal price.

And so tonight begins the battle of prices. Call up, state disappointment with renewal price. Ask for best price and then quote cheapest on the comparison. If no where near, say want to cancel when it's due and look else where. They may even come back and price match. Or that's the plan anyway xD

Past 4 years my premium has gone up a bit where nothing has changed except for getting more no claims bonus. God damn premiums being pulled out of their butts

Fronting is putting someone else as the main driver and you as a named driver, but with you actually being the main driver.

Adding a female as a named driver to your insurance is not Fronting, is not Fraud and is a perfectly acceptable way to potentially decrease your insurance costs.

Never go with the auto renewal - it's generally not the best deal available and some insurers bank on people being lazy and put the premium UP, expecting they'll just leave it by being lazy.

Some great deals out there if you consider cashback. My renewal this year was 350 and I got 55 cashback, so 55 quid for effectively doing what I was going to anyway. It's free money, and it's fantastic.

Get your renewal quote then go on the comparison sites and see if you can get cheaper then get back in touch with your current and see if they can beat it.
