My motherboard has two PCI-Express 16x slots and it's got me thinking, are they only used for graphics cards? See, i'd love the option of being able to add an additional graphics card in the future, but I don't know whether I will have to use the second slot for something else like for example a sound card.

16x is way way way to much bandwidth for something like a soundcard, I think I have seen network cards which use the 1x PCI-E slot so in the future things like soundcards / tv cards might use the 1x slot but no way will they use a 16x slot.
