looking to finally get a screwdriver set as i dont always have the best fitting tool for job

better to get a box set with individual tools
or
one of these space saving multi purpose ratchet things with a many many ends from torx to philips

Individual tools - as has been said, the Wera stuff is nice. Those multi purpose things are a bit crappy tbh and unless you are super anal about putting the bits back, you will lose some of them :)

Get a set of wera's man,

I can't emphasize this point enough.

I did engineering work for 18 months using Wera tools on a daily basis, cheap screwdrivers simply can't compare any more.

The problem with the "multi bit" screwdriver sets is threefold;

1. You lose the little bits all the time. Seriously, not even NASA could keep track of them all.
2. If you need to operate a screw at the end of a tube (happens quite often actually) they're pretty much completely useless.
3. They're almost always made of TERRIBLE quality steel and will strip at the slightest provocation, usually ruining the screw you're trying to drive at the same time.

Without hijacking the thread then, if the OP were to get a set of individual screwdrivers what are the most common types they'd need?

E.g. I've found two sets of Wera individual drivers on a well known website. Which of the two would you go for?

Slotted: 2.5 x 80mm, 3.5 x 100mm, 4.0 x 100mm, 5.5 x 125mm.
Pozidriv: PZ1 x 80mm, PZ2 x 100mm.
Voltage tester 3.0 x 70mm.

Phillips: PH1 x 80mm, PH2 x 100mm
Pozidriv: PZ1 x 80mm, PZ2 x 100mm
Slotted Parallel tip: 4.0 x 100mm, 5.5 x 125mm

The first set is cheaper but doesn't contain any Phillips. Looking at images, Phillips and Pozidriv look the same but I'm willing to accept a slap across the face and plead ignorance.

Phillips has 4 bits at the end in a cross, Pozi has 4 + 4 bits, so is different, but to the untrained eye can easily be mistaken for each other.

Pozi will normally work on a phillips no problem though or at least that's what I've found.

Other way round mate - a Pozidriv will not fit into a Phillips head very well due to the extra 4 drive wings on the tip and will easily cam out, but a Phillips head will work ok ish with a Pozidriv, but you should really use the correct bit for the screw you are using.

I knew it was one or the other :o

I bought a very expensive Facom set but I way prefer my Wera ones from Screwfix.
