Normal programs which max out your CPU

Can people list programs which seriously challenge a CPU nowdays.

Ive found VLC convert will show 100% cpu time

Movie Maker Im using now is showing at most 64% cpu time.

Just wondering which common programs really occupy modern CPU like i7 i5 and others

Arma 2 uses about 40% of an i7@4ghz I think (at most)

Orthos? Prime95? They're the two I have used in the past.

EDIT: Unless of course you mean programs you'd use on a daily basis, when you say common programs.

On my netbook everything maxes out the CPU

I should have been less tight and bought a proper laptop

wish it did on mine, only seems to use about 50% at the max that was on my old q6600@ 3.6ghz and getting similar results on this 2600k sandy bridge at stock

thats with 4 and 8 cores set in the menu and time critical set :confused:

Any conversion (video/audio) programs is expected to max out the cpu but I've found Firefox with online flash videos (flash player) taking my it very high.

Some of my games which only run on 2 cores will come close to maxing out the first 2 cores (I'm looking at you, HL2). I wrote a compressor the other day as well, maxes out 1 core (algorithm is too serialized for multithreading

). As for maxing out all 4... not much. All the other CPU intensive stuff I do is HDD-access bounded.
