Normal temps for 390x?

Hi, I got the Asus Strix 3 fan R9 390x for Xmas.
HAve installed it and played 15 mins of GTA V with it. It looks utterly stunning andis very smooth but I checked my temps....max of 90 degrees and typically hovering in high 80s. Is this normal for this card? My case has good fan cooling and my CPU temps are still perfectly fine. I heard the 390x can run hotter but 90!? is that OK?

It's quite normal for the high 80's. You could set a more aggressive fan profile if you don't mind a bit more noise, though your not going to damage the card at those temperatures.

I went for the MSI 390x in July, and had similar temperatures, though after I reapplied the thermal paste mine dropped 15dc across the board. Though I only went ahead as MSI still honour the warranty if you reapply the thermal compound etc.

I now get around 80dc maximum once I've been gaming a few hours.

Seems normal for the Asus as shown in this review...

The Asus cards have always lagged behind in the temperature side of things. The Sapphire coolers are the best for AMD cards.

Check the fan speed percentage when playing and if there is headroom then use a custom fan profile to keep temps down. Typically the 290/390 series can run at 90C without a problem though.

yea surprisingly the strix cooling solution isn't great even though it looks cool, most reviews put it at around 81-86°, thats why i always stuck with saphhire their cards are in the 70s

The hotter you run a piece of silicone the shorter it's lifespan will be, but with gfx cards this just doesn't come into affecting its effective lifespan. I have my old MSI 9750s fan curve set very conservatively, currently in 2D mode running at 57c

Well I just played FarCry3 and was sitting at 94 degrees. Thats ridiculous if I am getting thermal throttling already! haven't overclocked it or anything. And my case has good airflow. Im really not happy If I am not getting the most out of my GPU if it is throttling. This card boasts "30% cooler". So.... what was it running at previously!? 122 degrees!!?!

Something doesn't sound right there. What % are the fans running at?

A quick browse from google shows other people with similar problems to you. It looks to be a very hot card, though as stated you aren't quite at throttling temps. If you could mount a fan inside the case (bottom) to blow onto the GPU it would probably help. If you're not happy with it the next step would be looking to return it I guess. Good luck!

OK! if it was running farcry at 94° then you have an issue, my guess would be the thermal paste not applied correctly, try a stress test with furmark, if it goes again over 95° and keep gowing up, shut the test and RMA it or try to change it for a sapphire nitro

Only getting 20FPSin towns in DayZ with everything on max. I thought this card would play everything at 1080p maxed out.

how long did you run the test ? doesnt make sens that farcry stresses the card more than furmark

Just the time it auto runs for, maybe a few mins?. Did it again got 91

I ran it in manual with 8x MSAA and it kind of settled out at 93 degrees. (with poor FPS lol).

DayZ is cpu limited afaik and even the topend cards get 25 fps in the cities but higher in the mountains/countryside.

If the card is hitting 94C the thermal paste is most likely not applied properly. RMA it since you would void the warranty if you applied new thermal paste yourself.

ok first thing first, update your driver here , the first one had a glitch that stuck fan speed at 20%, get the latest one i think it's 15.12, it fixes the glitch, then retest again

YEs been reading that about DayZ.
My last card (GTX770) would typically run in mid 70's in games.

yes something is wrong with your card, as i said could be the thermal paste, i had the same issue with a powercolor card, i dont know if you can change your card for a sapphire one do that, or at least RMA it.
