Normal temps for 390x?

Hang on hang on. I just tried Furmark with the side panel off my case and got 84/85.

Could mean airflow is bad in your case. You must have good intake and exhaust fans to take the heat out quickly.

Try running Valley benchmark @ 1440P VSR for a while and see what temps yu get. That works better than furmark for heating the card up.

This is my flow setup. I would say pretty "normal" certainly not bad. CPU temps are always great.

Hi, I got the Asus Strix 3 fan R9 390x for Xmas.
HAve installed it and played 15 mins of GTA V with it. It looks utterly stunning andis very smooth but I checked my temps....max of 90 degrees and typically hovering in high 80s. Is this normal for this card? My case has good fan cooling and my CPU temps are still perfectly fine. I heard the 390x can run hotter but 90!? is that OK?

Normal, No. Typical for ASUS, Yes...

After the documented issues with heat and the ASUS DCUII 290/290x and then seeing diagrams showing that ASUS used the same 5 pipe cooling plate for DCUIII (STRIX) it's no surprise that people are going to have similar issues.

Best avoided

just curious, what are the temps of your cpu during these tests? because if the gpu suffocates, am guessing the cpu will be even worse, that actualy might explain the low fps
dont know if one 120 intake is enough.

You have only one 120mm intake fan bringing in cold air into the case? Id say you would need a minimum of two. And around two for exhaust to ensure the case has decent airflow other wise its airflow is slow and warm air can build up some what in the case.

You do have two but its a 92mm? Try and swap it for a 120 or even a 140 if you case can take 140. The temps on the Strix 390x are quite warm for that card.

hmmmm new case might be on the card yet. The side panel sits right up next to the GPU because its a midi tower.

See that could be another factor. I had my 290x which was in a case that had that problem. Side panel rested on the gpu and even made vibrations at times. Anyway i found even with 2 inflow and 2 exhaust still wasn't enough in the case. GPU hit low 80s in that case at times. Side panel resting on the gpu kept the warm air below the gpu as it made it hard for it to rise up in the case.

Finally got a big tower case. NZXT 820 phantom enthusiast and temps went down to low 60s at times goes to high 60s in certain games. Massive difference. Also airflow is much better in this case than previous.

Before buying a new case it's best to install MSI Afterburner and enable all the on screen displays for fan speed, gpu temps, etc and with the case closed run Valley benchmark for around 15-30 mins @ 1440P VSR, 8x MSAA, Ultra.

This will show you what the max temps are and at what fan speed percentage. If the fan speed percentage is around 70% @ 90C then just make a custom fan profile with a higher fan speed.

I defo think the case has a lot to answer for though. Because the side panel is right against the gpu the vented air from the gpu has nowhere to go but bounce off the case and back into the card. New case would be nice anyway to be honest.

i have the corsair carbide 540, old but one of the best cases i had, easy to work inside, and really great airflow

Well I got MSI AB and set a custom fan curve (100% fans kick in at 80 degrees now instead of 90 and curve before that adjusted to match). Now im only hitting 70 degrees in Furmark with AA set to 8x! much much better! This is still with side panel off the case. But Im going to buy the NZXT 340 anyway because my PC deserves a new case. but I'm sure my temps will be fine with new case and fan curve. Not bothered by the increased noise because its not too bad at all and I always have headphones on anyway.

Also it was sitting at 60 degrees in windows, now a much more respectable 37 degrees. Does Afterburner have to be running in system tray at all times to be effective though? When I exit it fully fans revert to standard it would apear? If it needs to always run does it use much resources?

Wow I get 50 degrees in RUST now. Yesterday was 90! Just by running afterburner! not even putting in a custom profile. Just running it! IS that right?

I see some hi numbers for temps on these cards listed above but on mine idle 38... browsing the web( 3 screens you tube etc ) 52 .... and gaming 65 ....

When idle and browsing the web no fans at all its silent but when gaming the fans are running and AB controlls the speed.

AB doesn't use much resources and can be run at startup. Has the benefit of custom fan profiles and gpu overlay to get all the temp, fps information when playing games.

Try not to use 100% fan speed though. Will probably reduce the life of the fans . I run them at max of about 84% with an overclocked card.
