This just popped up on my news feed, reportedly people are being forced to give up their pet dogs after pet ownership being banned in July, then them being put down and used for meat in restaurants,

If they don't surrender the animal, it is taken by force.

Just horrific :(

Dog meat is commonly eaten in North Korea, I had the option of trying it at a restaurant in Kaesong when I was there.

NK has problems, as much of a pet lover as I am, this isn't one of the big problems but it is a bit of a surprise as it's only the wealthy people that'd be likely to have a pet in the first place.

I wonder what dog tastes like. I bet it's a bit ruff.
:p

It's a harsh world out there. When people in the country are starving to death, it's hard to justify keeping a pet.

Unfortunately, if the fat despot would give up his obsession with nuclear weapons and became part of the international community, his people wouldn't starve.

Yeah that is curious - one of the ways the Kims have held onto power is keeping those in the cities having just enough they have something to lose as no rebellion stands a chance unless it can take a grip in the cities.

They would also depose him fairly quickly once the population had more exposure to the wider world...

Maybe it's COVID-19 related as no one knows how hard they have been hit by it so they might be anticipating food shortages. China also launched their "Clean Plate" campaign on 13th August which may be a coincidence or a sign that they are concerned about food security this and next year.

That explains why he has framed it this way then

he [Kim] said that the ordinary people raise livestock and cattle while only the rich and elite have pet dogs. He called having pet dogs a sign of "capitalism" and "bourgeois ideology."

Kim Jong-un has indeed ordered a ban on pet ownership, calling it a symbol of "western decadence." According to a report by a South Korean newspaper, he also referred to the practice of having dogs as pets ‘a tainted trend by bourgeois ideology’.

As much as it's easy to criticise NK and Poo Bear, I wouldn't mind having rooftop snipers here to take out dog owners who let their pets defecate on the street!

In North Korea decadence is described as owning a pet, this is the logical extension of what we see in the West of attacking people who have "all the wealth".

Most replies seem to think it's funny that people will lose their pets, shame on you. Would laugh while you watch them being brutally skinned and boiled alive?

When you don't live in a free country governments can take away rights on a whim... they don't even need a good excuse if the people are sufficiently subjugated as in North Korea.

The problem for me is if Boris Johnson brought in a pet ban tomorrow alleging that it helped spread COVID most people would be lining up to hand them in, deny it all you want you would and you'd report others who didn't from what we've all seen over the last 5 months.

Kim looks like he's not wanting for anything to eat, little ******* wouldn't look out of place in a Sumo competition.
