Hi,

My northbridge cooler on my aBit IC7 is on the way out. The fan is making a horrible grinding noise! Can someone please recommend me a cooler that will clip onto the mobo without any need for mods?

I assume I can just use AS5 for the cooler when installing it? Correct?

Cheers.

I used a thermaltake tiger on mine along with some Artic Silver, fits perfectly. You can also ask Abit for a new one and they post them out for free - the poor fan is a known problem - they don't quibble.

Skidd.

The tiger does yea, hooks under the existing loops on the mobo like a treat. Not sure about the other ones recommended.

My tiger has been running for >2years 6-8 hrs a day without problem.

EDIT: Think I actually installed a different fan on mine as the stock one is quite fat (high) and interfered with my CPU heatsink. Just double-check the dimensions before you order.

i use a ThermalRight NB-1 with a tiny 40mm YS-TECH FD4010 fan. works a treat & the NB-1 is a direct replacement so it fits perfectly.

You can leave the old heatsink on and just replace the fan, my mate did this and it was a lot quieter. Also if you peel the sticker off and put a drop of light machine oil in the middle it is suposed to stop the noise.

This is the fan its an led one, you just remove the fan from the heatsink.

Got a Swiftech MCX159P thingy on mine, fits perfectly - although hooking it into the existing motherboard hooks when it weighs so much is a little scary!

Not the best picture I'm afraid...

My mate was running his with no fan on just the circle heatsink for ages and it ran fine if i was you id just take the fan off.

Been running mine passive for at least a year, since the fan broke. I just removed the fan, as a broken fan just restricts air flow for passive cooling.

Still got the FSB clocked to 250mhz, with no stability problems at all.

My suggestion? nothing..same as corasik, i took the fan off when it started going and have used the bare sink for about 1yr now without issue, this is with a 2.8 800FSB HT Northwood at 3.4Ghz 243x14 1:1 RAM and stock cpu voltage, dosen't go past 45C max on the system temp. XP-120 used to cool the cpu.
