northbridge fan? necessary?

i was just wondering i have a gigabyte 8ik1100 motherboard at the moment (till i get a conroe setup) my fan on the northbridge fan has become very annoying. its on a heatsink and i was just wondering do i really need it? or is there a setting in the bios i can use to lower the fan speed

you can use a zalman passive northbridge heatsink if it is ok on your board. works on my msi neo2 plat, and does the job nicely and quietly.

do you think it would have much impact on the system if i diable the fan?

I have disabled the fan on my epox board and just have a low RPM 90mm fan (950rpm)blutacked to the bottom of the case and aimed at it

Although it didnt even reach 40c under load when the fan fell over once so it is worth a try.

Depends on the chipset. nf3 needs a good passive heatsink, nf4 needs a fan or a passive heatsink with good airflow. If it gets too hot you will get a bsod or it will smoke. I've done it twice and it did survive tho.
