Northwood to Dothan upgrade?

Hi, my current system is a socket 478 P4 Northwood 3.2 running @ 3.5. It's an engineering sample with an unlocked multiplier, but I'm not brave enough to use more than 1.65v to push it past 3.5Ghz. My mobo is an Asus P4GPL-X which supports the CT-479 adapter for Pentium M. I would like to hear any thoughts on whether it is worthwhile moving to a Dothan 750 (1.86Ghz) with a view to running at least 2.4Ghz (I've a funny feeling my mobo doesn't allow voltage adjustments on the CT-479). I use my system mainly for games with a 7800GT. Thanks!

Well I can get a used Dothan 740 and a CT-479 for £75 approx. I reckon the sale of my Northwood would cover that, so this won't cost me anything...

I went from a 3Ghz Northwood (@3.6Ghz) to a Pentium-M.
Running at 2.5Ghz + you will notice a significant difference in gaming performance.
At present I am running the same board as yourself and I am well happy with it.

Thanks for the replies guys.
@JudgeC I've not seen many other people with the same mobo! I've a few more questions, hope you don't mind. Were you able to change the vcore in the BIOS or is the Hipro5 mod some sort of volt mod for the adaptor? (I'm pretty useless once a soldering iron is required). Am I right in thinking downward adjustments of the clock multiplier are possible in the BIOS? Finally, for cooling, I see most of the screw-on Zalman's do the job - any idea if the Arctic Freezer 4 will fit without trouble? Thanks in advance

Hipro5 mods involve a soldering iron ( :o ) and they're not really neccessary.

If you bend the AF4 clips a bit it should fit on the adapter, that's what I did and it's fine.

I can change the Vcore no problem on my P4GPL-X with the CT-479 on it, although I know some people with the board had problems. Maybe its to do with the revision of the board.
The Hipro-5 mod makes a few changes on the CT-479, including allowing an adjustable vcca. To be honest, i am the same as you, put a soldering iron in my hand and people run for cover and phone the fire brigade. I bought my modded CT-479 from LawryWild on the MM, although it hasn't really improved overclocking ability much above my original CT-479.
Multiplier changes in either direction are not possible on this board unfortunately when it comes to the CT-479 at least. My advice is get hold of a P-M 730 or 740 which give you a 12 and 13 multiplier respectively. This should allow you to run with an FSB of 200+. On my 750 with a 14 multiplier, I can only get to a stable FSB of about 188 -190.
With regard to cooling, I haven't any experience with the Freezer 4, but the Zalman's are straightforward to get on, as long as you are careful.
The stock cooler that comes with the CT-479 is surprisingly effective and will keep your CPU running cool enough at 2.5Ghz and a bit above.

JudgeC very helpful - many thanks. I've gone ahead and bought a 740, just need to get my hands on a CT-479 now.

Good show, make sure you are running the latest BIOS (0401) for the P4GPL-X before you stick the CT-479 on.
