Firstly a reformat is not an option available.

For parents notepad I was going to re-install Norton 2007 Internet Security package to extend the subscription period. I understand that the updates will probably halt once the initial expiry date has passed, but at least the program nag will be bypassed.

Have tried the Norton Removal Tool, and manually searching the registry for Norton and Symantec entries for deletion.

When reinstall Norton it still requests product key, but once all completed it still remembers expiry date.

Is this stored locally on the machine, and where?

TIA

It probably either phones home to check, or the actual key contains the expiry date in code.

Some people are set in their ways. Have tried the Kaspersky Internet Security trial, but she wanted to stick with Norton. Also doesn't like the idea of paying for a new package, and if it came to that it would probably be Norton 2008 as it's available for cheaper.

Will look into it more at a later date. Currently now using SP2 firewall and AVG antivirus until I can get around to reformat machine.

I would have thought it's Norton's servers too that remembers when the key was started but this is not always the case . I 've been using Norton2005 for 2 years now ,by just uninstalling the program and re-instlling it using the same key on the packet.

I had exactly the same issue a couple of days ago. What you need to do is use the Norton Removal Tool, reboot, go into the registry, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE and delete any folder called SYMANTEC and then navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE and again delete any folder called SYMANTEC, then do a search on the C Drive for any folder called SYMANTEC and NORTON and delete these as well (make sure that you search hidden folders and system folders), reboot again and next time you install Norton you'll be asked to input a key.

Thanks for the tips allosunshine, but discovered it was Norton Internet Security 2006 installed. Following the pointers didn't make any difference, so could be server based.

Don't fancy installing it on my PC to test if it is server based. Or formatting the notepad to make sure all traces of Norton are removed.

Shame AOL ditched Kaspersky Active Virus Shield, as would have preferred that to AVG and Avast.

At least its tarnished their liking of Norton :)

I remember in the olden days all you had to do was push the system clock on like 30 years, install it, then roll it back once done. :)

They cottoned on to what people were doing and got it to do a real time check...the boring people. :p

Only reason Norton are still in business are PC shops are selling them with their computer as standard, or advertising it on TV for super cheap. NOD32 all the way :p
