my new laptop starting hanging during boot, after a week of use.

so i went to safe mode and uninstalled norton antivirus. now its boots faster.

why does such a high profile antivirus have such bad rep. and yet still comes preinstalled in many popular pc brands.

That's something that has always puzzled me.
I personally wouldn't touch Norton with a very long bargepole.
Norton still seem to manage to get the software installed on so many new machines, I suppose they think if 10% leave it on there and pay for it it's a result, it's surprising how many people will just buy it out of ignorance, beats the hell out of me how they manage it.

The bad rep is only within the tech community too, most average home users think Norton is the dogs No swearing!! because PC World recommends it with their new PC.

Was Norton actually the cause of your problems? Or was some spyware interfering with the loading of windows due to Norton being loaded. It appears odd that out of the blue a piece of software that was preinstalled on all machines of your type would suddenly start locking up your system

Had you changed the system in any way?

No defending Norton, I don't use it, but it may be a symptom rather than a cuase.

i actually installed avast when i got the new laptop, as i didnt quite trust norton.

everything was goin fine for a week. i got used to norton's many pop up's as it automatically added 2 addons to firefox.

last night it did have a pop up saying i should fix some cookies as it could track me. so i clicked fix. there was a lot of cookies marked a low level?

thats all the changes. then the next day, i restarted my pc and waited for some 10 mins to boot.

i thought i was going to have to use the recovery discs.

this laptop is the HP flagship model envy 15 btw

i would rather use norton than nod32,at least its stops malware unlike nod32

Got some further info on that? I repair a few systems a day which are often infected. Those that go for NOD32 I don't see back (even with a previous company I worked for, we supplied NOD for about 2-3 years and still nothing back).. the ones I see are always Norton or AVG.

As far as detection rates go, Norton comes out very well in all the AV tests I've seen.

I wouldn't buy it for myself, but I also think it absorbs the blame for a lot of general PC trouble. I find pre-loaded images to be really sluggish anyway from certain manufacturers - even after removing the crapware (AV trials included) I think people look for a common denominator (Norton trials are very popular) and then start apportioning blame.

In this case, yeah, Norton may well be the problem but in general don't fall into the trap of spotting Norton in the system tray and then think you've found the cause.
