My friend has Norton Internet Security on her mac, what i would like to know is can she buy any Symantec Norton AntiVirus like the one sold in the Security and Anti-Virus section of OC and use the code in the box.

Why on earth does she have that on her mac? I'm not gonna say macs don't have viruses and the usual but it's really not needed.

Well her boyfriend download loads of ***p and he has a bad habbit of not scaning things for viruses, that why she has norton.

norton is more of a virus imho it does nothing but harm the pc/mac hogs the systems resources, will never use it again

edit: marlos i love your sig :D

There a no actual viruses in the wild, just a handful of trojans and they rely on people being complete idiots like trying to install ActiveX components into the browser or use dodgy downloaded versions of iWork '09

My best answer to your question would be to uninstall it.

plus the mac came with norton.

I did say that I can't answer the question but I'd doubt she can use the code for one thing for something else.

Regarding the above - WTF? I've not heard of that before unless she bought it from somewhere that I'm not going to mention but where they wear purple shirts and would have stitched her up by recommending it.

Seriously, google around, listen to the advice you've been given and just uninstall it. Apart from anything else, Snow Leopard has basic anti-trojan stuff built into it.

Thanks steveo.

Thanks for all your replys but no one has answered my question can she buy an OEM copy and use the code, she's happy with norton plus the mac came with norton.

Why waste money? Nobody is answering your question because your asking silly questions, which people have replied to your question.

You might aswell get her to give the money to charity than stick Norton on an Apple Mac.

So it's alright to be ripped off is it? People can give advice but most of the time the ignorant people choose to ignore it. Fair enough if your friend wants to waste her money but why spend money unneededly.

Who said anyone was being ripped off, I used AVG on someone's advice and had loads of viruses so that was goood advice then.

I too have never heard of a Mac coming with Norton preinstalled. One of the reasons people go for Mac's is because they don't come with a load of preinstalled crap.

Anyway, to answer your question, no you can't use a serial from a PC OEM version of norton for a Mac. The OEM serials are different from Retail serials because they are cheaper and designed to be distributed with new computers. It's kinda like you can't use an OEM Windows serial number on a Retail CD.

Also, I use AVG on every computer I own and don't have virus problems. I also work as an IT Support Officer and we recommend AVG to everyone, and have NEVER had anyone come back with virus problems.

Well i'm the first then.

Don't pirate, don't get viruses.

Simples.

Pretty much the only reason you need a virus scanner on a mac is to scan email attachments that you send to windows computers to stop the recipient from getting a virus. It is otherwise a waste of space and should be uninstalled.
