I uninstalled the AV from 2005 (at the end of my one year's subscription) and installed BitDefender 9 Internet Security.

I've left Norton Utilities on my computer. Now when I run Speed Disk it gets to 19% and then stalls, with the Optimization Map in grayscale. I receive NO error messages.

When I try to run the Windows Defragmenter I receive error message: "Disk Defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume: XPHOME(D)"
please run Chkdsk /f.

When I tried to run Chkdsk I got a message that it was unable to do it now and would I like to do it on restart. I said yes, but nothing seems to have happened. I still get to 19% and the same message with Windows.

Would I be advised to remove the remaining parts of Norton? I quite like one button check but never really know if it does what it says on the tin - even if it's sorted out hundreds of short-cut errors I've never noticed an improvement. Clean Sweep is more or less redundant because I run Window Washer on start-up. The one thing I wouldn't want to lose is the tweeks I've made in Norton additional tools Windows System optimizer (hiding bits and pieces) etc

So, if I was to uninstall Norton, should I be able to Defrag using Bill Gates' Windows degragmenter? Will all the little tweeks I've made be restored to default? Would I be advised to try to install the parts of Norton over the existing parts to see if this cures the problems?

Are there other (better) programs out there? Advanced System Optimizer for example?

My computer is due a restore to makers settings as it's started to develop a few snags here and there but perhaps getting rid of Norton, or sorting it out may give my computer a new lease of life?
