It's been a while since I made a thread with my own photos in it. In fact, I rarely share photos in here anymore. Something I want to change for next year :)

Anyway. I got married back in June (yay for me!) and we went on honeymoon to Kenya & Zanzibar (I'll do another thread on that) and when we were there we met a Norwegian couple whilst on Safari. We ended up spending a lot of time with them over the next few days and we talked about how we had wanted to visit Norway for a while, they insisted we go and see them in Oslo at least.

After that we got back and got thinking. My wife had never seen the Northern lights and we knew this was a possibility in Tromsø. A plan was forming.

Fast forward a bit. We got back a couple of weeks ago from 3 days in Oslo and 3 days in Tromsø and we had a fantastic time.

Norway is a truly beautiful country with amazing food, people and scenery. The polite nature of everyone. The "cold" also felt very festive and appropriate at this time of year. Without anymore waffling on, enjoy the photos.

p.s yes people...it WAS COLD (the amount of folk who asked me if it was cold was quite frankly, shocking :p)

Oslo

Our friends lived just outside of Oslo right next to a Fjord (like most of Norway) and so we took a late afternoon stroll to the 'beach' there

Thats all we did as a lot of this day was spent catching up with said friends and deciding what we would be doing over the next few days.

The next day we headed into Oslo and first made our way to The Vigeland Park, a famous park with some odd and interesting statues.

On this nearby river you can see the ice forming on the top of it.

One thing we found out when there is that the Norwegians LOVE their chocolate/candy/comfort food. Its basically one of the ways they deal with the constant cold. This one in particular translates to "Quick Lunch" and originally got famous for hikers. It's full of energy and when hiking you would take a few bars with you and nom it to get a quick energy boost. It looked like a Kit-Kat outside of its wrapper1

We also visited the "castle"

Then by coincidence and chance, there was a local Christmas Market starting that very day, so we visited and enjoyed some proper Norwegian hot chocolate and it all felt very very festive!

Despite being miles away from anything Latin, my wife couldn't quite escape the Churros :p

After this we went for lunch (no photos, I forgot! :o ) and the sun had started to go down and temperature started to drop. We made our way to the Theatre House as I had requested somewhere I could get a good reflection shot across some water, our friends had an idea.

This concluded the first day (yes, they had a fire channel)

The next day was 2 museums. The first one was the Viking museum with the ships. The 2nd one was an outdoor museum and it showed how Norwegian architecture had changed over the past 1000 years. Both were fascinating. The loved the ships especially :D - the level of craftsmanship was incredible.

Onto the Outdoor museum. I don't have much information when it comes to hard facts on these buildings except that they were very warm inside and that they were built "Raised" as you can see in some photos to keep rats/mice out.

Here some women were making a traditional "flat bread" - it was very sweet and warm. Delicious!

We finished up the day (and the end of our trip in Oslo) by driving up to the Sky jump to get a nice view of the city during sunset.

Following post will be about Tromsø - will start writing that now. :)

Tromsø

Here is where it got REALLY cold  - In Oslo we experienced temperatures anywhere from 2 or 3C down to -5C. In Tromsø when we landed it was -8C and throughout our stay the temperatures varied from -5C to -17C - this place was COLD. It was certainly the furthest far North either of us had been. The bitterness was instantly different from Oslo.

When we picked up the hire car the guy said to us it "might be a bit icey" - yeah no kidding...it was frozen shut :p

Eventually we got the door open and got the car started. Was quite funny to watch steam come off the glass as the car thawed itself out! I've got a mobile photo somewhere, I'll post it later.

After we defrosted our Suzuki IceBlock we made our way out of Tromsø and to our hotel, about 1hr away. One thing we noticed was the sun going down and it was...1:30pm  - by 2:30pm it was a twilight kind of dark and by 3-3:30pm it was night time! Very surreal indeed. This night the conditions were not great for Northern Light activity, we chilled indoors.

Our hotel was called the "Malangen Resort" and was based right on the edge of a Fjord, here was our view when we woke up. Quick note...due to the surroundings the white balance was a nightmare in Tromsø, I have been consistently stuck between correcting it to a true white and leaving it "as shot" - due to the constant twilight like nature during most of the "day" - colour like blue and magenta were very prominent everywhere. So if you notice some inconsistencies with the white balance, this is why. I would be split between correcting it and leaving it au natural.

As mentioned, the hotel was right on the edge of Fjord. All the rooms had these big windows and had no TV's or anything to distract you from the view. It was purposely designed this way. The bed also faced the window.

Plan for day 2 was to just take the car and...go for a drive. Stop for photos as and when we pleased along the way and basically do a big loop inc swinging back to Tromsø city and then making our way back to the hotel.

After this we headed back to the hotel and chilled for a bit. The aurora apps on our phones were saying there was a "good" chance of the Northern Lights due to predicted conditions and all things being considered.

After watching an episode of something, I went to the window just to have a look...then we saw them! :D

This prompted me to run outside with the camera!

Here we go, first sighting.

Woo! :D The lights very quickly went away after this. We went inside for dinner...with all the camera and cold weather gear next to the table, hehe.

After mains, I looked outside. Lights were coming back...I left it for a bit, we had dessert. Went and looked outside again and they were quieter. So we went back to the room to see what we could see from up there.

This is when the lights started becoming more active...

That does it! It was time to go brave the cold. The lights were getting stronger by the second!

For the next 45mins, we had an explosion of Northern Light activity. Greens, pinks, reds, even some blue at times. Huge amounts of light, whipping around and dancing across the sky...it was insane. Despite the ridiculous temperature outside...I barely noticed it. Too much adrenaline! :D

Enjoy.

Probably an adblocker doing something. Maybe whitelist his website?

Anyway, great shots there. You must be well pleased to have gotten such a good light show. Did you find Oslo expensive? I was fortunate enough to go for work January last year. Firstly, my gosh it was cold (-17c most days if I remember correctly). I've been skiing at the top of mountains in Europe and America and I've never been that cold. Secondly, was it expensive? I was there for work so not exactly picking cheap eats, but I don't remember having a single dinner for myself for under 70eur

Well I did some testing, different browsers, locations, devices. All fine. Also spoke to some friends and they don't issues. So my guess a specific configuration on i know nothings side.

Yes I was very pleased at the luck we had. Norway as a whole is horrendously expensive. I think we spent around 1200€ for the week and 3 of those days in Oslo we were staying with friends so we were not paying accommodation. That includes our flights as well. Lunch in a non fancy restaurant typically worked out 50€ between us without alcohol. If you can go without drinks and just stick to water etc then it softens the blow a lot. But if you want a fancy meal with wine etc. Expect 150€ easily.

I got a parking ticket in Tromso. That was 90€ :/

And yep that cold...its a different level of cold :D - I still have dry/cracked skin on my hands for not using gloves enough when outside taking photos.
