Caporegime
It's been a while since I made a thread with my own photos in it. In fact, I rarely share photos in here anymore. Something I want to change for next year
Anyway. I got married back in June (yay for me!) and we went on honeymoon to Kenya & Zanzibar (I'll do another thread on that) and when we were there we met a Norwegian couple whilst on Safari. We ended up spending a lot of time with them over the next few days and we talked about how we had wanted to visit Norway for a while, they insisted we go and see them in Oslo at least.
After that we got back and got thinking. My wife had never seen the Northern lights and we knew this was a possibility in Tromsø. A plan was forming.
Fast forward a bit. We got back a couple of weeks ago from 3 days in Oslo and 3 days in Tromsø and we had a fantastic time.
Norway is a truly beautiful country with amazing food, people and scenery. The polite nature of everyone. The "cold" also felt very festive and appropriate at this time of year. Without anymore waffling on, enjoy the photos.
p.s yes people...it WAS COLD (the amount of folk who asked me if it was cold was quite frankly, shocking )
Oslo
Our friends lived just outside of Oslo right next to a Fjord (like most of Norway) and so we took a late afternoon stroll to the 'beach' there
Thats all we did as a lot of this day was spent catching up with said friends and deciding what we would be doing over the next few days.
The next day we headed into Oslo and first made our way to The Vigeland Park, a famous park with some odd and interesting statues.
On this nearby river you can see the ice forming on the top of it.
Couple of random shots within Oslo city centre
One thing we found out when there is that the Norwegians LOVE their chocolate/candy/comfort food. Its basically one of the ways they deal with the constant cold. This one in particular translates to "Quick Lunch" and originally got famous for hikers. It's full of energy and when hiking you would take a few bars with you and nom it to get a quick energy boost. It looked like a Kit-Kat outside of its wrapper1
We also visited the "castle"
Then by coincidence and chance, there was a local Christmas Market starting that very day, so we visited and enjoyed some proper Norwegian hot chocolate and it all felt very very festive!
Despite being miles away from anything Latin, my wife couldn't quite escape the Churros
After this we went for lunch (no photos, I forgot! ) and the sun had started to go down and temperature started to drop. We made our way to the Theatre House as I had requested somewhere I could get a good reflection shot across some water, our friends had an idea.
The Theatre & surroundings...
This concluded the first day (yes, they had a fire channel)
The next day was 2 museums. The first one was the Viking museum with the ships. The 2nd one was an outdoor museum and it showed how Norwegian architecture had changed over the past 1000 years. Both were fascinating. The loved the ships especially - the level of craftsmanship was incredible.
Onto the Outdoor museum. I don't have much information when it comes to hard facts on these buildings except that they were very warm inside and that they were built "Raised" as you can see in some photos to keep rats/mice out.
Here some women were making a traditional "flat bread" - it was very sweet and warm. Delicious!
We finished up the day (and the end of our trip in Oslo) by driving up to the Sky jump to get a nice view of the city during sunset.
Following post will be about Tromsø - will start writing that now.
