Ok, heres the deal.

Work have asked me to drive to Leeds from Norwich , get to Leeds and do a 5 hour training course, then drive back to Norwich to get back into work for the next day..harsh i know.

Anyways, looks like my SatNav will take me A17 - A1 route. It will take me around 4 hours each way. Im not a long distance driver, and most calls/journeys are done within norwich. I believe my car is an Audi A3 1.9TDI, however thats yet to be confirmed..Could be a Smart Car for all i know its what ive been 'tipped' to have. Any tips or hints on the long distance journey ? Any tips or pointers as to what to avoid or look out for on the way there ? Any tips hints if i find myself lost (even with SatNav :P) ?

Will be leaving Norwich @ around 5.30am to get there for 10.30am, will be departing around 3.00pm..Not very confident about this journey, based on the duration i will be driving. Im going up on my own also....

Thanks in advance of any assistance !

Watch out for the speed cameras on the a17, and even if gets frustrating being stuck behind something on it, only overtake when its safe to do so. ;)

Done More or less the same Journey (Between Norwich/Wakefield) countless times. Done it in a smart car a few times as well actually :p. The journey up there shouldn't be too difficult at that time of day and won't take you much more than 3hrs plus any stops you have. Pay attention when you get near to Ferrybridge (where you'll come off the A1 and join the M62) as the junction has been changed massively and the sat nav won't be up to date. Will probably be a bit busier on the way back.

For approximate timings I usually take about an hour to get to Sutton Bridge, then another hour to Newark where you join the A1 than another hour or so to Wakefield/Leeds.

On the way back when you see a road sign on the A17 with "Byards Leap" on it, that's your cue to jump on the brakes as there's a camera hidden in the bushes just past it which I never see until the last minute :D

have done this journey many times. I would say 2 hours to newark from norwich then 1 1/2 hours to leeds (outskirts). Thats on a reasonable day with no hold up's (except the A17 which is one big nightmare whenever you do it!)

As said, watch the A17 camera's. There is also one on the A1 that isn't nicely placed. It's just as you go round a sweeping left hand and can be easy to miss. Think it's around 15 - 20 miles in on the A1.
