Gee, just fired up the original quake from many years ago and had a rather large nostalgia trip!

I can remember the quake test and thinking wow, and of course the game came out and for its time was fantastic. Hearing the dogs for the first time, getting the old rocket launcher and shamblers running at you lol

Came into its own with death match and hours playing over works connection CTF to Europe with the like of Hell clan and many others

anyone else have fond memories of this or am I just now toooo old!!

I stopped playing competitively around 2 years ago, but I still play the odd game follow the scene: www.quakeworld.nu
It's well worth checking out some of the modern development projects like ezquake: http://ezquake.sourceforge.net/ - if you put graphics to one side, in many ways QW is actually the most technically advanced FPS there is when you consider what you can do with the modern client, and I'm being deadly serious here: http://ezquake.sourceforge.net/docs/?features

Some of the incredibly cool stuff which you very rarely see in other games are a completely customisable HUD (dozens of elements with a variety of styles you can position anywhere on the screen), advanced scripting (if/then/else type syntax, custom variables etc), IRC support, multiview demos, QTV streaming and advanced teammessaging.

Oh, and it's also the most perfect blend of movement, aim and teamplay out there!

I used to love quake, and still play it for a from time to time, call me sad but i still think its the best game ever, kind of, lol

I play DM6 every lunchtime with the gang in work, with the speed turned up x2 and the mavity turned down to half. It's bloody frantic. I love quake, there is no better pick up and play multiplayer game.

Never mind Nostalgia, I purchased the ID Superpack from Steam, and i've been happily working my way through all the Dooms and Quake. Best thing now is getting Doom addons with improved graphics. You can also mouse look on quake 2, which was a real bugbear.

Fantastic :D

i going to have to investigate the ezquake thing more, looks very cool

and then start playing some, its been so long lol

Yeah, used to play death match with my brother all the time. I think he still plays online. My fave maps were DM4 and ZtnDM3.

Oddly enough, the past week I've been going through Quake 1 using the darkplaces engine. It really is a lot of fun, harder than I remember (while somehow also being much easier than it was the first time round). Would like to play it online but can't seem to get darkplaces to want to play online, and not sure I trust glqwcl to work properly under Vista. (Edit - anyway, Quake wouldn't be the same online without a 200 ping, TF and Qizmo)

You can also mouse look on quake 2, which was a real bugbear.

You can mouselook in Quake 2 natively, surely?

i never played Quake I too much i must say, but i had the best multiplayer moment of my whole life playing Quake2, CTF particularly, i never to this day, found another game that could make use of teamwork so deeply, and it was so fun also, can you say Quad + Power amp attack on ennemy base, making lighting sound with every shot, damn that was so awesome, or grappling thru base instantanly stealing flag, the defensers having no chance to hit you.

The maps and the weapons etc.. that mod was really nicely done

The best memories of a multiplayer FPS i will never experience again :)

Well I couldn't.

of course you can, it's just not activated by default if i remember correctly :p go in option, there should be something like : mouselook : enable

I remember playing an awesome mod on Quake1 tho, think it was Team Fortress, god that mod was so good :D

Whilst I could consider it a wasted mid 20's I had some wicked times. I mostly played CTF and it's variants (all the way through to Quake 3). Playing quake 1 on my pentium pro with a voodoo card (how much!!!).

1st time playing online and getting mullered. Tweaking your 33k modem to get the best ping - changing ISP's every 5 seconds to get a better ping. The 1st time you took down some LPB's and feeling great. Forming a clan with some mates and joining your 1st league. Receving my 1st ISDN bill for 500 quid :O after finally having enough of modem ;) Watching my 1st 1 on 1 match (proper players) and thinking it looked like aerial ballet (rocket jumping) so much skill involved. Sitting working your team binds for DM/CTF - who needs teamspeak ;)

Good times indeed - for me a pioneering game for online play, game mechanics, mods etc. A classic for all times.
