Not a thrilling spec me I'm afraid....

It's been a good decade since I last built a machine and I've been rocking a macbook since 2006 (ducks to avoid low flying rocks).

I sold my desktop machine around 18 months ago as I never used it, and I am now regretting it.

I've just purchased a basic home cinema setup for home (TV, receiver, 5 speakers, sub - usual drill). Currently the only source is the sky box.

I'm looking to, as cheaply as possibly, build a HTPC which will be quiet and allow me to play video from the hard drive, DVDs and also possibly blueray depending on cost. My requirements are very minimal, as follows:

HDMI/DVI out for connection to a Yamaha receiver with HDMI input
Some kind of sound link which supports 5.1 (any whatever technology goes with this - dolby digital/DTS? sorry, total noob here). Over HDMI or optical is fine. Sound quality must be good though.
DVD drive
Large hard drive - circa 2TB should do it.

Performance wise I don't really care as long as I can play all video formats in 1080 (i/p - don't know the difference, does it matter?)
There is a possibility I may play live for speed on the PC but this is a very low spec game performance wise and isn't a deal breaker.

Case wise... it must be small, I'd prefer a shuttle style cube case due to my TV cabinet (can post a photo if necessary).
Quiet is very important - with a low performance machine is it right to assume I can use low flow rate fans to keep it quiet?

Can't think of much else really, I'll probably buy a copy of windows to bang on it as the mrs will have to be able to use it so I don't think a linux etc. build would be sensible.

Is it right to assume that no matter what option I go for, there will be at least a 10/100 ethernet socket available on the motherboard? If not then this is something I do need.

So, OCUK, what do I need and how much is it going to cost me? I must stress that performance above and beyond decent quality audio and video playback is irrelevant to me. Cost is very important as after spending a couple of grand on the 'home cinema' getting this past the mrs may be tricky ;)

It will be kept in one of the cupboards either side of the centre speaker/amp. I haven't measured up the space but I can do that tonight if necessary. There are no shelves in the cupboards, it's just an open cube inside.

Sorry for poor quality, I used my phone for this.

yeah, would be worth posting the size of it, just to make sure the case is ok.

is the back of the unit solid or is it open, trying to see how the unit might be able to get an air intake.

The back of the unit is solid, I was planning on putting some holes in for cabling and potentially installing a couple of fans driven from the mobo into the back of the unit - one in and one out.

Alternatively I could cut out a fair chunk of the backing panel although how much depends on the structure of the cabinet - I may be able to remove the backing panel all together.

Will post sizes up later.

Spec wise, what would I be looking at to achieve my performance requirements?

intel would be your best bet, and it depends what you consider cheap. IMO cheap is an i3 2100 build, should cost around 250 all in if you shop around. but if all your doing is watching videos, i see no reason why you couldn't go for a h67 build, with a sandy bridge pentium processor, such as a g630. this should only cost around £150 if you keep costs down. also helps if you have a OS. If not, XBMC is a great media center OS.

the following is the most i would expect it to cost you, so don't freak out :D.

noticed your post count, so have a look around the members market ;).

gone for the i3-2100 processor.

included windows 7 o/s.

included a small ssd drive to allow o/s apps to be installed on then use the 2tb for storage.

case will be dependant on the size of your unit, but listed this one to give you an idea of whats around.

included a retail blue ray drive, if you have blue ray playing software then you can go oem.

So about £320, have the same thing bar the blue ray in my tv cabinet and as long as the door is shut you dont really hear it.
I put a 120mm hole in the back of the cabinet to feed the cables and that's done the job for me.

As for game play, i could play SWTOR at 720P with low/med settings but if your going the way of game play a 6450 will give you a bit more wiggle room at £12 more.

not a custom build but will do the job and tbh i quite like the look of the microserver unit

Can drop the i3 to a pentium since it's only for HTPC use: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-401-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=2037

Another £60 saved ;).

To be fair the pentium CPU doesn't support quicksync whereas the i3 does. Technically the i3 is overkill but should the guy want to rip his DVDs/Blurays to the HDD then the i3 is going to make this happen faster.

Slightly different option. The CPU is built into the mobo with wifi and bluetooth too. Passively cooled so will be very quiet.

2TB storage drive, sataIII SSD to boot the HTPC double quick (using hibernate would get you back to what you were doing faster). Bluray drive included as requested (OEM and Retail differences have been covered already). Case is a personal preference really but this bitfenix case looks nice in my opinion for the price.

This sounds much more reasonable price wise. I think I'll have a good look into this at the weekend. I only live 10 mins from OCUK to might pop down there if all of that is ex. stock.

No requirement to rip anything really, I'll probably just be watching stuff from netflix, downloaded videos/documentaries and whatever lovefilm send in the post (DVD or Blueray depending on what drive I end up going for).

I do really want a passively cooled SSD backed system now - I bet that's quiet as a dead mouse!

You can install the OS from a USB Memstick, if you have one big enough you could ommit the optical drive for now if you won't use it much. Then add a bluray drive later if you wanted to.

Case is cheaper and comes with a PSU. This system isnt going to be pulling a lot of wattage to be fair.

ok as requested the dimensions of the cabinet are as follows (width and height are dimensions of the aperture at the front, gotta get it in there):

Width 380mm
Height 350mm
Depth 352mm

The back panel offers no structural rigidity and therefore can be cut away as necessary.

well it looks ok for the server Gav mentioned as the HP has the following specs:

Dimensions (HxWxD)(with feet)
10.5 x 8.3 x 10.2 in (26.7x 21.0 x 26.0 cm)

also worth noting the weight, is your unit solid enough to hold :
Weight (approximate)
Maximum
(all hard drives, power supplies, and processors installed) 21.16 lb (9.6 kg)

Minimum
(one hard drive, power supply, and processor installed)

The thermal take case is tiny really

Added the Bluray drive and left out the SSD for now. This 2TB drive isn't eco (i.e slow to save power), so more suitable as an OS drive. I'd partition off say 100GB for a "OS drive" and have the rest for storage.

You haven't given a budget, if I knew what you were happy to spend it helps to spec. If you mounted the tv against the wall on a bracket you could put any sized case ontop of the unit or the speaker, if the unit fits where the speaker was ;)

AMD apu's are great and one of the Mini Itx boards comes with a cool remote i think :)

I know the one you mean. It was an Asus Deluxe something or other, I looked for it it's not listed here anymore :( Was £100ish with built in wifi and bluetooth for the FM1 socket (llano) and included a remote with a keyboard on the reverse of it. I'll get onto Llano in a minute.....

have u considered using a amd apu ? theres some great bulid logs in the small form factor forum

Llano is a very niche market. I think you'll find to build one on the mini-itx platform will cost as much as an intel i3 system. It's a long argument but the intel socket supports a broader range of CPUs, llano wins at gaming until you actually decide to add a dedicated GPU.

The case is what's key here. Myself I would use a midi tower case and put it to the side of the unit.

Fractal mini tower details

This helps keep expansion possible and I think it looks discrete, google for a video review. You'll notice it has sound proof coatings and the biggest mobo it will take is mATX.

If you can decide on a case we can try to fill it and argue...i mean debate over what's best for your needs then. PSUs is going to be another factor to consider when you go mini-itx and what size fits in the mini-itx cases.

Aye, 10kg should be no problem, it's a solid timber unit and I tried adding some load to the base of the cabinet last night, it took all of my embarrassingly large mass without so much as a creak (in excess of 100kg).

Budget is £350, although I wouldn't mind going to £400 for the right system.

I'm not keen on changing the layout from the current setup (I went to great lengths to find a unit which will accommodate the amp and speaker. The mrs isn't a big fan of technology being littered around the place either which is why ideally I need something which can be hidden in one of the cupboards.

Wall mounting is a no no too, we discussed this before buying the unit (I'm not averse to it but I have to keep her indoors happy).

The case is what's key here. Myself I would use a midi tower case and put it to the side of the unit.
Not up for this one I'm afraid, it would mean moving my speakers around to accommodate it and upsetting her indoors.

Some of the options above look great - thanks for all of your input guys, much appreciated.

It's payday this weekend, as as I don't bank with Natwest ( :p ) there's a good chance I'll be buying some bits and bobs. The system you posted a couple of posts back looks most interesting actually - how much processing/GPU power does this have? Would I be able to play LFS, which lists the following as a minimum?

Minimum computer requirements
Any version of Microsoft Windows, 32 or 64 bit
1 GHz CPU, 256 MB memory, 3D graphics card

It certainly isn't graphic intensive.
