this is a new thread where people can pass on interesting bits of infomation that people probably do not know already, I thought this might be fun, and I will go first.. ( please end your post with " not a lot of people know that!"
..why whips crack,
The cracking sound of a whip is a mini-sonic boom caused by the whip's tip exceeding the speed of sound. As the whip is swung, a wave of energy travels down its length, gaining speed as it goes because the whip gets thinner towards the end. This concentrates the energy into a smaller mass, causing the tip to accelerate rapidly. When the tip breaks the sound barrier, it creates a sonic boom, which we hear as the whip's crack
interestingly the term" whippersnapper '"whippersnapper" is derived from the terms snipper-snapper and whip-snapper. A whip-snapper was a seventeenth-century term for a young man with nothing better to do than to hang about idly snapping a whip. being young men, they are often youngfer than the old men grumbling about them having nothing better to do

Not a lot of people know that!

Sharks are older than trees.
Sharks have been around for over 400 million years, while the first trees only appeared about 350 million years ago. So when the first tree popped up, sharks had already been cruising around the oceans for 50 million years.

By total area, England have more tornadoes than any other country on earth.

this is a good example, though you forgot to end your post with " not a lot of people know that!"

The ISO code for Switzerland is CH, which is derived from a Latin phrase that I can’t remember off the top of my head but it has something to do with the popular font Helvetica.

In old printing presses where you laid out letters and word stamps in rows to create the text, there were little wedges put in at the sides which were pressed against each other to compress the lines of text so they wouldn’t move.

The little wedges were called coins … and when you wedged in lines of text, you ‘coined a phrase’. ( at least thats my understanding )

Everyone hates on Ryan-air, but even if you throw in all the extras and hold luggage charges, they are still cheaper than 99% of other flights.

It should be obvious as it's just basic maths, but not a lot of people know that as they can't do simple addition.
