hi,

my pc has stopped booting up all of a sudden! there are four lights at the back, in a 2x2 grid. i've noticed they are normally all green, but right now they've suddenly gone like this:

[green] [red]
[green] [red]

does anyone know what this means?

any help much appreciated!

Proberly be helpful if you listed the hardware you have. Not saying i have the answer, but its usually a good idea to list the hardware to make it easier for others who can offer help.

good point, t310s!

mobo: msi k8t neo
cpu: amd3000
gfx: ati radeon 9800 pro
mem: 2x512mb (unbranded)

i think they're the only relevant bits... thanks!

do you mean tose are the lights that show up on your PSU? If so then perhaps there is some sort of indication in *** manual about it? Whe you say it doesnt boot, what happens - be a bit more descriptive i.e. do fans spin, mobo lights come on? nothing on the screen? Not being bad or anything but we might be able to help you a little more if we knew a little more about the problem :)

PS:Sounds like it could be your PSU which PSU is it? do you have another you could try?

msi use lights on there boards rather than a beep system (or they used too) look in your mobo manual for what the light code means

If you mean the lights on the D-Bracket, i can't see how a USB bracket could be causing this problem. That page you linked to shows the USB bracket that came with the older MSI like yours, i remember i had one to, don't think its possible to plug them into the mobo the wrong (only fits one way), so i'm failing to see how it would have any relevance to your boot problem.

There's a second port under the stick on that bracket (could never understand why they did that) , but i'd guess 2 lights per port.

The bracket only goes to the USB header on the mobo, i don't think you can have debug lights through USB header, but i could be wrong.

Maybe the debug is routed through the USB, i wouldnt know.

well i figured the lights were significant because when the PC boots up normally, all four light up green. now it's not booting properly, 2 of 4 lights are red.

fans are spinning, but nothing appears on screen. so annoying!

Try another graphics card.......

Do you still get the relevant boot sequence, can you still hear windows load in the background regardless of the lack of display?

ok! apparently the LED configuration signifies "Early Chipset Initialization", which means the CPU is fine but doesn't tell me much else.

after messing around with the components for a while, it turns out one of my sticks of RAM was the culprit. it's working now, albeit with half the memory.

thanks for your help everyone.
