Not built a PC in 8 years. Can I build a decent gaming rig for less than a grand?

I want to build myself a new PC so I can dig out my old steering wheel and go sim racing like I used to but I have no clue what's happening these days in the world of PC components. What sort of rig could I get for this that will last me a few years. I would need a monitor too with this!

I need monitor, mouse and keyboard peripheral wise. OS wise I have my key from Windows 7 from my laptop which I have used since 09 so can get my hands on a copy of 7. Staying well away from 8 lol

Cheers for that. Would you really recommend windows 8? I really have not liked using it. I was looking for an i7 not an i5....would I have to expand my budget?

Also I know I am on the overclockers forum but are their prices better than elsewhere? I think the last pc I built was all from ******

Is there any way you could put off buying a monitor immediately? You don't have an old one, or a spare TV? Because that will take ~£150 from your budget and mean that the rest of the components won't be quite so nice. Same goes for keyboard and mouse (any of your friends likely to have spares?) If not ~£850 for pc hardware should still certainly be enough for a decent gaming pc.

Oooops sorry about the competitors. I would rather order all from one place and from what I have heard overclockers customer service is top notch. I assume If I was able to build my own pc 8 years ago I should have no trouble now lol?

Also to make me further sound like the noob I am in that product recommendations above in this thread will the system run adequately cool enough?

My last monitor was a crt and I'm not even sure I have it still lol. All I know is I still have my top of the range (at the time) steering wheel and I'm fed up of playing project cars on the ps4 controller. So I'm starting afresh. The budget could be increased slightly. I have my tv but it's not in a position to really be viable to use. I even need to buy a desk for it so I can clamp the steering wheel down lol

The 4690k is an awesome little chip and overclocks pretty well, with that cooler you'll be fine. An i7 will be better if doing rendering and that kind of stuff.

I only game and I literally cannot tell the difference between the 4690k(i5) I had and this 4790k(i7)

I'd get rid of the dvd drive and spend the extra £15 on another case and get a cheaper keyboard and mouse, like the cheap combo's but that's just me. I wanted to build the very best PC and upgrade monitor etc later on, I really like my cheap k&m so I've kept that :D
