I've had 2 4870's 512MB from the day they came out, and while they play everything with all the eye candy 4XAA 16XAF I'm still not convinced I have future proofed.
Farcry2 with AA AF and Ultra settings dropped down to 30FPS and under on a few occasions (though it is better with 8.12's).

I think it could be due to only using 512MB at any given time. I'm considering getting the 4870X2 as I dont believe the new GTX's will be much quicker and if they are it'll only be buy a little and the extra cost will be high.

I game @ 1680*1050 btw.

Please no "overkill" comments due to the res, better GPU's means faster FPS. For example GTX280 kills a CF4870 setup in Farcry2 @ 1680*1050 (benchmarks in this forum section).

That sounds weird, because I got more performance out of a single 4850 at 1920x1200 max settings, with some AA. There's definitely something weird going on. You could possibly not have crossfire installed correctly?

Sometimes you have to install it using a certain method, where you only install one card first, install the drivers with just one card, reboot, install the second card, and install the drivers for the second through device manager. :)

How is the performance on other games?

Dont get me wrong the performance is good, normally its around 50FPS, and in Vantage I get just under 15k, So I think they are doing what they should. Its just the minium FPS which are quite poor.

This is what i found with my xfired 4850's. The framerate would occasionally bottom out and stutter. I crossgraded to a GTX 260 and haven't looked back.

I'd conservatively say i have around an extra 5-10fps more on minimum frame rates than the xfired solution. It seems a lot smoother.

Also, i game @ 1920x1200 - full PC spec in sig.

What's your PC spec?

I see a lot of posts where people with dual ATI cards are complaining about min-fps and stuttering.

Have you considered trying a single 4870 1gb and selling the 2 512mbs?

Or you could wait for the RV775XT....840SP 48 TMUs and 900mhz core clock......

My only other suggestion would be to try a single GTX 280
