Not enough fluid to fill res...

Hi All,

Recently fitted a new watercooled setup in my PC, now that all the air has been removed from the loop I haven't got enough fluid to top the remainder up!

Its feser UV purple liquid, just wondering the tiny amount extra needed, would it harm the system if I was to top it up with either de-ionised water or boiled (but cooled!) water from the kettle?

It really is a small amount but its enough for the pump to make a noise due to not being totalled submerged (its a xspc 200 rad/pump combo) and dont really want to buy another litre of fluid.

Thanks

Doesnt it defeat the object of using Feser if you add some form of water in anyway?

yea boiled water will screw ur system. Just cause its boiled just means that it contains no bacteria. However the problem really sint bacteria its limescale normal water contains lots of limestone which will screw ur system along with all the other things in water like floride. So either get some Deionised water from halfords. However i would still say get urself another bottle cause even though di ionised water will work its not going to be better than the coolant.

To be honest i would wait till u have another 20 quid and go buy urself two bottles so that when u refill again later in the year (when u flush the system) u will have enough to fill the loop u have now and also fill it to the right amount when u replace the fluid inside

feser is non conductive (ish) and not anti algae, you can still get nasties in there as my recently drained 12 month old system will testify.

I'd but DI in there to top it up.

I've used DI in a loop for over a year with no algae growth at all, its fine and its not chucking £10 a a tiny amount of liquid.

Thanks all, just topped up with some i had bought to help flush and clean the radiator.

Will give the pump a couple of hours and top up a bit more, didnt want to chuck another tenner for a few ml's :P

fair enough just remenber that ull need to buy two when u next need to flush the system (but thats me i always only use coolant cause whats the point in spending loads of money on wc and then not making the best of it. Yes Di ionised will be fine just i always use coolant and only coolant as considering its the cheapest part i always spend the most to get the best results. Mind u i still need to get additives to give the coolant a bit extra life. But hey thats what i do doesnt mean its anymore right than any other way.

yeah next time i will make sure i have 2 bottles, but the amount that needed topping up was hardly anything so really cant see it making much difference. :)

thanks :)

yea probably wont be any difference but its just the "what if" situation what if it gives me an extra 1 or 2 degrees extra cooling. But hey thats me always trying to get the temp down

sort of related note, does anyone know where to buy distilled water? In the states it's available everywhere but so far people don't even know what it is when I ask them if they carry it.

If u live in the UK u can get it from Halfords. However pretty much every car shop will sell it as that is its main use.

i think you mean deionised there, halfords sell deionised water from makers like carplan as its battery water.

I would expect you'd need to be going to a pharmacist for distilled?

But just don't! Just no benefit whatsoever!

No thats what i meant De ionised water. Its the same thing as distilled water as water for batteries has to be nearly as pure as distilled. But yea distilled would probably be better but a lot more expensive. I think if i remenber correctly i picked up some from lloyds but cant remenber now was along time ago.

However there is one big problem ur forgetting distilled water will be nearly as expensive as actual coolant if i remenber correctly it was like ten quid (the bottles are tiny also).

There will be no difference between the two that one might actually be able to measure... certainly not with any consistency.

To the OP: just use deionised water from your favourite high street supermarket at around 50p a bottle next time.

yeah seems fine, also with the extra air in the loop getting pushed out the temps have gone from 35 idle to 33 idle, not much difference on the load, just wait for it to cool down in the loop 1st :)

yea like i said deionised is fine distilled is just a little too expensive and its only slightly purer (no idea if it would actually make a difference, doubt it). So really u dont need to get distilled at all but anyway post in a new thread next time if u want to know something off topic (just makes it a little hard to respond and read the thread as two questions are being asked from two different ppl).

mind you i would say the best place is a car shop of some sort like halfords (as they will definately have one) to get deionised dont know what its like in america but in UK normal supermarkets dont sell everything, yet :P.

GING
yea not surprised at all that ur temps have dropped since filling up the loop properly its just simply cause it has more surface area to heat up and in this case its water. It gets me interested actually i might have to test that one day how much of a temperature difference would there be if u used a larger res instead of a smaller one..... hmmm interesting :P. Anyway G hope that helps
