What happens when you havnt got enough power out of your psu? because when i put my 430 or 5770 in the screen flickers and goes on and off, but is fine when i have an x700 in. Im guessing that because the x700 is older and has much lower performance it draws less power. I currently have an atx 550w psu

Sounds like classic symptoms.

Some times the oc can completely refuse to boot, worse the PSU can go bang.

Is the "atx 550w" psu a known make and model? any labels on it?

oh god, classic symptoms to what? :( sometimes the pc just switches off and sometimes restarts, if that means anything, i thought that my cpu was on its way out.

make is R-Senda model is DR-350T I've owned it for less than a year and paid like £15 for it

Make sure the next PSU is from either.

Corsair
OCZ
Coolermaster
Bequeit
Enermax
XFX

and you will be fine, a 500-600w rating is plenty,

I only ever use the cheapo PSU's in really old rigs, running pentium 4's and single core athlons. These machines are worth next too nothing anyway so if anything breaks it's no big deal. However to use something at £15 on your main rig is absolute craziness!

The ones mentioned above are nice budget psu's... perfect for what you need I'm sure :)
