ok so currently have a Virgin superhub 2 down stairs in the living room, and an 8 port gigabit switch, all my home cinema runs off this, and the poor cousins! being my phones n ipads and the gaming pc are upstairs using wifi !

i have now cancelled virgin, and got bt fibre 900 installed upstairs where the pc is, :) victory at last,

however initially i was happy to have my home cinema connected to the wifi as it will mainly be for updates etc, apart from the apple 4ktv, but checked that today and it seems happy enough streaming on wifi,

BUT i also have a NAS connected to to the home cinema,

so im now thinking if i leave it all connected up to the 8 port switch, is there something i can connect that to that will give me my internet via wifi from the bt hub upstairs!

sorry its all long winded,

Technically the best option is to run a cable to the switch from the BT HomeHub, it may not be the easiest option however. You could use something to act as a wireless bridge, or power line, or some mesh products include an ethernet pass through, wireless bridges can work, power line generally sucks and mesh can be anything from awful to pretty reasonable, but it’s not a substitute for a cable and be wary of products that won’t do bridge mode (google iirc). The BT kit is down to under £73 at present online, it’s the V1 kit (AC1700), but no double NAT, it works reasonably well and from memory has ethernet pass through, bonus points for getting improved coverage over the rest of the house. It’s also possible to do with some Ubiquiti kit or routers, but this is more useful if you already have a router that supports wireless bridge mode (routers thy support a WRT firmware tend to be capable).

Thanks for the help , yeah agree a direct cable would be best solution, it’s a might have to at some point, given how much costs have gone down over the years, how hard would it be to have Ethernet built into each room on a new build, even have it as a cost option, who wouldn’t pay !

I’ve really struggled finding the bt kit you mentioned, see the ac1200 but nothing for the 1700 ?

What I have found that’s slightly dearer at £90 on the rain forest is the Tenda Nova MW6-2 Whole Home Mesh Wi-Fi System

gets good reviews, seems to suggest it has Ethernet passthru

would this work ?

Apologies, the v1 is AC1200 - I should have looked before posting rather than going from memory. I wouldn’t personally go with a Tenda kit, no dedicated radio backhaul, no way of setting up without a phone app (yes, if the app is pulled or not updated when something major OS wise changes, you can’t set-up your mesh system). The BT kit gets solid reviews and is nearly £30 cheaper, out of those two I know which I would focus on reading up on.

£185 per room option on my new build. Daylight robbery in my opinion! Doing it myself around the house for what it would have cost for a single room...

Wasn’t an option in my 2015 new build, but that’s quite a mark up for throwing in a few cables behind a wall hmm yeah I see your point, especially if you got a few rooms to do eeek

will give these a go, I will unpack them carefully and if they don’t work how I will will return them and just get a long Ethernet cable and run the bloody thing up into the loft and down the back of the house into the living room,

it’s probably not a hard run, but if I buy a complete cable the holes will have to be bigger to fit the rj45 blues thru, but really don’t want to start buying crimping tools etc, else I might as well wire the whole house

TBH you’ll likely be fine with mesh for general usage. If you do run a cable, normally you buy a surface mount or recessed back box and a face plate for it and use a punch down tool rather than crimp plugs. Either way EZ Plugs and a crimp tool are cheap (you don’t need the EZ tool).

Ouch. Developers vary a lot, if you buy off plan you generally have more options and leverage, but if it’s built by the time you get involved, they just aren’t interested. TBH I’d rather just run my own and be done with it.
