hey guys,

so ive been playing company of heroes a lot recently and noticed that on my OSD its saying that only 18% of my GPU's are being used and i struggle to hold 60FPS at 1080p!

btw im running the blitzkreig mod with HQ textures, could it be a VRAM issue? surely is dose not use 4GB?

is there a way to fix this? as it gets worse when theirs rockets and explosions all over my screen! :D

cheers

Company of Heroes 1 or 2?

COH2 isn't supporting Crossfire/SLI (yet), so you'll need to download the Catalyst Application Profile pack which essentially disables 1 GPU on the board.

its the first company of heroes, sorry yes i forgot 2GB (card is described at 4GB)

ahh ok, im looking at upgrading to a 4770k and Z87 board, will this resolve my issue and i will probably buy a new GPU when AMD release them

so how can i resolve my bottlenecking issue out?

my system spec:
i5 760@4ghz
msi p55 gd80
xms3 2x4GB 1600MHZ
HD 6990@900/1375
OCZ 120GB VERTEX 2E SSD

You won't, not with games like COH.

Same as DOWII, I get 110 FPS average, but I'm still bottlenecked a fair amount in it, those games simply want more core for core performance than is available.

Not that it's not playable.

The thing is games like that are hugely CPU intensive. Given the year which the Company of Heros 1 came out, it is most likely to use only 1-2 cores as well, and certainly don't help with the situation.

Specifically for COH1, there won't be any different between a Haswell i5 or i7, as the game won't be using the extra threads/cores. Upgrading to a Haswell i5 and overclock the nuts of it (which WILL require delidding the CPU and getting rid of the stupid heat trapping sealant inside for dropping load temp up to 20C). A overclocked Haswell i5 would certainly help you get some meaningful increase in frame rate, but I still doubt it's gonna hold a solid 60fps with the game not using all 4 cores.

The Intel options are the fastest available for low-threaded CPU demanding games, but its performance is still a long way to go to hold 60fps in CPU demanding games (e.g. for Guild Wars 2, even with the game using 4 cores at 80% on with my i5 2500K overclocked to 4.70GHz, I still dips down to 30fps in scenes like 30-40 players nuking the field bosses/dragons and its minions while GPU usage takes a free fall....). The "what a joke" 5-10% performance increase per gen over the last few gens don't help with the situation neither.

don't understand why people feel they need 60fps for this sort of games anyway...

stay with your 760, unless you need something that uses loads of threads then get a 4770k, i upgraded from a 750 at 4GHZ to a 2700k at 4.6 and it's better but it's not blown me away.

It's not just about 60fps, but more about being irritated with all that GPU power sitting there not being able to use them...

For example, if I had a 7970, I wouldn't be happy to have it performing at 7850 performance half the time due to CPU bottleneck.

its the fact that my 6990 should be pushing out 60FPS on this game easily

and it dips into mid 20's and i get spikes in the fps while playing the game.... sooo annoying!
