Hey guys,

Just done the Talk Talk speed test as my internet has slowed to a crawl, not loading videos and web pages taking ages.

Now it's showing I can get up to 4.36mb in the house, yet the computer is only getting 0.91 wired directly to the router with everything else closed.

Normally I would be happy with that speed but the most I have ever seen on a download in the last 2 years is 600kb/s

The only reason I can think of for the loss of speed is the router isn't connected to the master phone socket, it's connected to one upstairs.

Is there anything that I can do to speed this up? Thanks.

Bare in mind ISPs display the speed in bits, not bytes in which the PC will display. 600 kilobyte is roughly 4.8 megabit, so the download speeds you're seeing sounds normal enough.

Now what's really strange... why is the connection between your router and PC so slow? What router is it? Have you tried another ethernet port? Another ethernet cable?

You should see faster speeds connecting to the master socket, and perhaps even better speeds if you replace it's faceplate with an ADSL filter one if you know how to. But right now it seems to be a router - PC problem, not an internet - router problem.

Ah thanks :)

I'm currently using a Belkin N+ router. Don't have any other cables long enough to try atm, but it's not in a place where it could be easily damaged.

Tried a different ethernet port on the router?

Have you got a spare PC like a laptop lying around to test the connection on the PC side? Just to rule out it's not your main PC that's limiting the connection.

In all honesty though, move the PC next to the router and use a different ethernet cable to ensure it's not the current cable at fault.

you need to post the actual stats for the router like sync speed etc. as then we can rule out a bad connection or whatever. However I would expect a huge increase in speed if you had the router in the master socket with a decent filter. Talktalk aren't the best ISP either by a long shot, but I shall leave it there for now
