Right,

Maybe a bit of a rant here, but I'm quite annoyed really.

Just been to the Costcutter on campus to get some milk, the total came to £2.46. I paid the woman at the till will a five pound note and she gave me £1.40 change. I glanced at the change and it didn't look right, but there was a queue so I moved away from the till. It was ridiculously busy, so I moved just out of the shop to check my change.

I wasn't given a receipt because the woman disappeared off straight after dealing with me and I should have been given £2.54 change, so I'm £1.14 out of pocket. So I went straight back into the shop only to be told by the manager that I have left the shop and policy states that errors cannot be rectified once you leave.

I have the feeling there is nothing I can do and I know that it's not much money really, but it's more the fact that the woman was stupid enough to give me the wrong change when it's shown on the display for her!

So yeah, sorry for the rant... Is there anything I can do, or is it my own fault for leaving?

I know its money but just chalk it down to a life lesson learnt.

Not sure about the policy but im not a shop owner so why would I :)

Nothing you can do once you move away from the till. Makes it to easy for them to say you pocketed it and tried to claim more or what ever.

Yeah, it isn't anywhere near a significant amount of money, I just wondered if that was what happens. As people say though, my own fault, lesson learnt :D

As mentioned the problem is that when you walk away you could claim that you didn't receive the money even if they had given you the correct change - your claim may be unintentional wrong (you dropped a pound coin without noticing say) or it may be fraudulent but it's difficult for a shop to know that. Just chalk it up to experience I'm afraid.

I was short changed by a tenner once, so I let them serve the next customer then said that they short changed me. They took the till out the back and check if it balanced, it was £10 up, so I got my tenner back :)

They did say that had I left the shop, there would be nothing they could do about it.

This happened to me once for a similar amount and ever since then I do a quick calculation on what I should get back and then pay. Helps loads and I also take my time to check the change, dont matter if theres a line behind me,I dont care.

Its our money after all so take that 6 secs or so to check out the change...

Nothing you can do, did it as a part time job for 3 years with school/sixth form. The fact is you've left the till and the cashier has already gone through some more customers he/she mind is going to be set on clearing the queue of people quickly not recalling how much cash he/she gave you.

You should have questioned the cashier on the spot, they would see the cash you've been given and the figures on the till. It would have been that easy, no offence but it's your problem.

This happened to me, they couldn't give me £1.15 change so I took a bottle of coke and told them to **** off when they complained about it. This was years ago and I haven't had a single peep from the shop at all.
