Gladly, his old system ((5800x3d, wraith prism RGB cooler, 32GB RGB DDR4, 5060ti, 850w gold PSU ( with enough connectors for a 5070 upgrade) all in a Phanteks Eclipse G370A Mesh, windowed DRGB case...
... is worth ~£1000 on the second-hand market)), so that pays for most of this. I'm just fronting the money and adding a little to it in the name of Xmas, but this means he won't have a working system anymore without the new PC having a GPU, So that'll be a 5080 in the name of his birthday (he is trying to run 1440p at up to 240hz, which he knows is going to be unlikely with 'only' a 5080), but he can always upgrade that should he ever have the money later
As you can imagine, We have been umming, and ahhring about waiting for the 5080 super, but now everywhere is saying it will come out in '26 alongside CES '26, plus there will be a stupid lack of stock, and inflated prices when it comes out, so we're not going to **** about waiting for the super, just get the 5080 place holder, and be done with it for now

You've literally only just spent something like £380 on a B-Grade 5060ti a couple of months back, and you had to "front" the cash for your son then too.

You only just got the 5060 Ti, I'd at least take that out before you sell the rest. They're perfectly capable of 1440p and with upscaling will get very good FPS in most games.

well, it's not just my money, is it? and it's not like the money is dead, since the old PC is worth a fair wodge, enough to pay for the majority of the jump to AM5 anyway! at least 9800s are in stock, and don't cost a mental amount of money any more, same to be said with the 5080 too

When I had my current PC built, I went big on the GPU(4090) because I knew that I'd not be wanting to upgrade my GPU for as long as it took for 8k to become more mainstream, but Making sure that I had 5.0 pcie, should I ever really need to update the GPU in the pretty far future, by that time we will be on high AM5 refresh, , and what 7080 supers? that's what I'm waiting for, just for me, and if he has the cash then, he can do what he likes! I'm sure that all the computers my dad got for me were expensive in the days of BBCs C64s and amiga 1200s, I was told that I had to sell the C64 if I wanted the A1200 for Xmas in '92 though, it was only £50 with all my accessories, and cassette games with it, but I guess that he need the money, fair enough, now it is just my turn!

the whole reason for splashing out right the now on his GPU is so that I'm not splashing out in the future, right now, the 5080 is the third best card on the market, and it might overclock a bit higher than factory too ( he is an overclocker) if I had the liquid money spare then I'd get a 5090 for myself, and give him the 4090 if he wants to sell the 5080 in the future and buy a better card with his money plus some special occasion money from me then that is his business, I'm not going to stop gifting him money just because a stranger on the internet thinks I shouldn't, newsflash, kids cost money!
All my kids have at least 5k in the bank to go towards buying houses in the future. However, I still spend more money on them anyway, my job is done with the larger purchases they will make in their lives, this feels almost like pocket change to me in comparison as I have little need for money atm, I've got nothing to do with it because i'm hemiplegic now, so no more motorbikes, cars, or holidays for me, just sad days sat in my wheelchair playing chess, or watching reruns of star trek if I could still game properly, then I'd be getting a 5090, and and maxing out my 4k 144hz fps to play on. Still, yeah, I have no need for that now, so seeing my son happy is worth every penny, because it's not like we can walk into a pub, and spend quality time together( can't walk, and can't drink on my meds, gawd, how I'd like to take him to a good festival, and spend 1 hour just dancing with him!

exactly why the old PC is worth what it is! it's a capable 1440p PC, so imagine what it will be like in the hands of a 1080p high hz gamer, and ofc, it is already built, a lot of people want that too esp parents for Xmas
please do note that my son has a 240Hz 1440p monitor, and that we are chasing max fps here because of that, not gonna pair a 5060ti with a 9800 are we???

If you were on the now end of the road AM4, and you discovered that your rig is worth ~1k on the open market, what would you do with the money? Give me a £1k base _build (without GPU), please, show me your sensible build! Put your money where your mouth is.

I spent 5k on my PC, but I hope for it to last a long, long time, and even then, it will just be a cheap AM5 refresh, and a decent GPU when I finally get a good 8k screen in the future
