Hi there. Will soon be building a new PC but don't want to jump on the Vista / DX10 bandwagon just yet, but will do at some point in the future.

As I have bought hardly ANYTHING yet, I'm really floundering from scratch. BUT I have ordered the monitor - 20.1" Viewsonic 2025wm.

What graphics card would be best considering my monitor, the fact that DX10 isn't important right now, and with these sarifices I wouldn't expect to pay 8800 prices. By "best" I mean for gaming, movies etc.

Apart from the "cheaper than 8800" thing, budget is pretty open.

:)

You sure you cant stretch to an 8800gts 320mb?

Take into account they have awesome image quality and are faster than anything out as of now.

Be mad to buy anything less than an 8 series card, fair enough they have Dx10, but they are totally untouchable in Dx9 performance as well, they absolutely destroy ATi in Dx9, also as above they have much better image quality as well.

You wouldn't be buying the 8 series card for Dx10 as no one is, they are buying them for the performance they give now in Dx9 as Dx10 is not here yet, and as i said their Dx9 performance is untouchable, so if you can stretch to the 320mb GTS i would, i certainly wouldnt buy an ATi card as they do not have cards out that are as fast. :)

wow.... almost made faux pas of the year, didn't I?

Thanks for that.... didn't realise the cheapest 8 series was still better than anything else non-8.

Looks like 8800GTS 320 for me then :D

Thanks again

If you can stretch to a 8800GTS 320MB then do so, no point spening 150 or something on a DX9 and remember the 8800GTS 320MB kills all the high end DX9 cards in most games (7950GX2, X1950XTX).

The 8800GTS 320MB is great value for money :)

Forget about DX10. Just because they are DX10 capable does'nt mean you need DX10 to run one. The 8800's are simply the fastest cards in DX9 and that's a fact. Either a 8800GTS of some flavour or wait until the R600/8900 cards appear and wait to see if the price drops.

most of the buyers who have the 8 series didnt really think of its dx10 capabilites becuase it crushes any dx9 game

Yeah Nvidia is the only way to go, they totally destroy ATi in Dx9 performance, shame their R600's delayed, as theres just no point buying any old slow ATi Dx9 card at the minute. :)

sorry to **** on your parade but i hope you have better luck with your vx2025 than i have had. it arrived on saturday and the DVI refuses to work. Dsub works fine at the native resolution but DVI just doesnt want to know. called Viewsonic today who got me to email in with my invoice and serial number etc so i'll give them another ring tomorrow to keep them on their toes.

lovely monitor though, just a shame it doesnt work properly.

Sorry to hear that Todge, hope you get it sorted.

Mine should be arriving in the next day or so... I'll let you know of any issues. The first thing I'll be sweating on is the dreaded dead/stuck pixel !!!!!!

Errrmmm.... touch wood!

none on mine, though i have never had any. 2 17inch iiyamas here with no deadies either :) as i said its a lovely monitor but the DVI not working bugs me since i paid for a monitor that has DVI and Dsub lol.

Faster by a fair margin. Sound advice here. Waiting a month will tell you where ATI are in the race. Otherwise the 8800's are very solid cards.

You're right to wait with Vista. Wait until the first DX10 game you want to play arrives. Or if you want to play with something on your new rig, get two HD's and dual boot ;)
