I've renewed with my current insurer this year and had all the policy documents through via web download, but I thought it a bit odd that they hadn't taken my premium from my account.

I check on askmid and lo and behold, my car isn't insured

I rang them Sunday morning and spoke to a hapless chap called Stephen who didn't know what the askmid website was but was able to give the payment authorisation number and what have you telling me my car is insured.

I checked again this morning and its still showing as uninsured. Now as this was a simple renewal, there shouldn't be a period where I am uninsured, surely?

I don't want to be in a position where the police are siezing my car, so as a precaution, I have all the necessary documents, but has this happened to anyone else?

Do you have a private plate by any chance?

I only ask because something similar has happened to me in the past. I genuinely don't know how valid askmid is and I don't think all insurers share that info to the database. Perhaps someone else knows if askmid is an actual approved authority on if a car is genuinely insured or not

It can take days for the database to update.

Switching insurers and I was being chased by my current insurer becasue apparently Admiral won't talk to others, saying I was showing as still insured by them. Took about 2 weeks for it to change over. The systems are infallible. If they have been on a (hopefully recorded) call saying you're insured and you have the documents you should have nothing to worry about. Just make sure that payment goes out in the next 30 days or so or get back on the phone. Don't give them an excuse to not insure you should the worst happen.

Give it till the end of the week and then chase.

Shall do. Just worried about getting tugged. Living near Bridgend, there are plenty of wet behind the ears bibs who care little for common sense and just want to assert their authority. Fortunately there are a number of great ones and my experience has been balanced, but it's hassle I can do without.

Keep a print out of your insurance certificate and explain your issues with it showing on MID, that should be enough to avoid any issues.
