For some reason, I enjoy games where I am exploring places where humanity once was but now is abandoned. For example, I really enjoyed going back to Nasa in starfield, and I like the 'walking sim' type games like What Remains of Edith Finch, one I forgot but it takes place in an old English village and I think you're stuck in purgatory, etc, the less combat the better. One of my favourite parts and probably the only part I remember of FFXIII is visiting a village that was long abandoned and just seeing how intact it all is. I enjoy just exploring these things at my own pace, preferably puzzles along the way and stories to uncover.
I doubt this is a genre in of itself but have you played any games that no matter how loosely, fit that description?

Is that Everybody's Gone to the Rapture? Also The Forgotten City might be something for you.

Yes and yes loved it. Would help if I listed them but I have a really bad memory for game titles, especially ones finished quite quickly.
Played one that puts you on the moon by yourself which I enjoyed, forgot the name... but I think theres a sequel when you go to mars.

Good shout on DS, never really tried it properly, NMS I have and enjoy.
When I used to play WOW I used to like stealthing around all the dungeons etc, I think there is also an element of being somewhere I'm not supposed to and also just experiencing things differently, like a WOW private server I tinkered with once and I had the world but absolutely nothing in it and I liked just flying about.
Reminds me, I might see if I can do something similar on Elden Ring, make myself invincible and fly about.

Sounds like Deliver Us The Moon and then Deliver Us Mars, played the first, need to get the second.

Probably a bit more on the puzzle side than exploration, but have you tried The Witness? Also probably not exactly what you are after, but currently playing Cocoon which is superb and involves some exporation of a stunning environment.

Yes that was the one! Hopefully Mars will come up on sale for winter.

Had to Google it but yes I've played the witness, great game. Also one called call of the sea I really enjoyed.
I think Outer Wilds is an exploration/puzzle game that I've never really played come to think of it.
Cocoon is actually on my wishlist but not for the reasons mentioned as you note.
