Hi,

Basically my brothers computer had a major graphics card error at the start of windows, I managed to fix it by safe mode and un-installing graphics driver. Then when I would try and reinstall the latest driver when windows boots it would go to windows starting screen (xp SP3) and just before user logon screen it would just go black. I managed to get it working with a really old nvidia driver (182.50) but it still wont load games, or heavy GPU programs. If I try and start a game it the lot of pixels will go weird, it shows the colour but not the colour its meant to show on certain places of the background and program and then the computer like freezes and I have to restart to gain control.

I've checked the mobo and GPU for physical damage but I cant see anything.

If anyone could help would be grateful.

(put this in general hardware because I'm not sure its the GPU that is the problem and I don't have a clue what could be)

PC Specs:
Asus p5q deluxe mobo
GTX 260
4gb OCZ reaper 800mhz
OCZ stealthxtream 600watt PSU
Intel e6300 core 2 duo

Bad video RAM perhaps - probably best just getting a new card to be honest although I'd try in another system to see symptoms persist in order to rule out any other underlying issues..

I would run some Diagnostic software on the system, depending on the software it should test out side of windows so that will tell you if its a windows fault or hardware. You can get some off the Internet, I'm not going to mention any however as I am unsure if it brakes forum rules.

YOu need to run some tests to determine if it is software or hardware problem.
From what you said rolling back the driver got it sort of working suggests software.
But if its been working absolutely fine upto one day where it gave your brother the blank screen on startup - without any other changes being done, suggests a hardward problem is developing.

Listen!!! It's a faulty GPU if it wont load any games, get a RMA or a new GPU all together.

Just because its not loading games dose not mean that it is the GPU, It might be any thing from the HDD failing to a software problem, It needs diagnostics ran on it and then he will know what the actual problem is.

It is more than likely the GPU speaking from experience and the symptoms described - I'd just test another known working graphics card in the slot to be sure.

When I try and load up OCCT to try and stress GPU it freezes while it is trying to load the program. Can anyone recommend any other software I could try? and thanks for all the help from everyone.

I'm almost certain the symptoms you describe relate to the GPU being faulty and requiring replacement. To a lesser extent it could be a failing PSU not giving enough juice to the GPU but I doubt that...
