so my dad computer has decided to die this morning been around and i think the motherboard has died. This wasn't to unexpected i was planing on giving my current pc to him (in my sig) soon, The problem is i was waiting for the next intel cpu's (ivybridge?) and they now seem along way away

so the question is should i just go for intel 2500k setup? or try and find my dad a cheap cpu/mobo/ram setup as a stop gap before he gets my current rig?

i should note that i have given him a laptop for now which is not great but i know he doesnt like to use laptops

What do you both use the PCs for? If yours is struggling with what you use if for then I'd consider an upgrade for yourself now. I don't think it'd be worthwhile getting a cpu/mobo/ram for your Dad as it'll probably cost in the region of £60-90(ish) for a pretty basic setup anyway. What about just a replacement temp new mobo for your Dad?

my pc is used for video editing/some gaming my dads pc is a basic internet box where he listens to music (amd 3700+ 939 2gb ) so it will prob have to be a second hand board

If you've got the cash to spend now then I'd go for a new setup now for yourself, i5-2500K, 8GB RAM (perhaps even 16GB), Z68 motherboard. You'll notice a big difference in video editing. Could hang onto your current 4870 for now and see what the new cards offer in January.
