Not sure what to get

Im an avid gamer and would like a new monitor I have some rubbish iyyama monitor its decent 27 inch 1080p it feels like a load of rubbish any way.

I have a 280x but am looking to upgrade this next year im not sure if I should get a really good 1080p monitor or get one with a higher resolution especially seen as Id like to get a gtx 970 in the next 6 months.

My budget is £280-£350 but that is pushing it a bit I have no idea what to get. My girlfriend is going to get it me for xmas so I have to tell her which one but I don't know my self!

Id like a 1400p 120hz but I cant afford one so do I get one with an awesome 1080p display and good hz or one with a better resolution I could potentially only benefit from next year

The 970 is very poor in its price category and phase of life at the moment, and will likely only get worse. Plus it will hardly be an upgrade in some games.

If you don't want to go above 1920x1080 at the moment, just spend £180-200 on one of the better 24" 1920x1080 TN 144hz then assess the GPU and VDU situation next year.

Otherwise go for the ASUS MG278Q (2560x1440 144hz TN - same panel as all the others). It's a very good monitor and will last you a while. Can sometimes be had for £350 on deals, ~£400 atm.
