Not sure what to upgrade

Hey all

My current rig is in my sig. Clearly the main bit that could do with a makeover is the graphics card department. I was planning on buying an X1800XT around september time, but wondered if it was worth investing money into DX9 if i'm going to buy a full blown conroe rig and maybe DX10 if its suitable just after christmas.

So, do i buy an x1800xt or equiv in a few months time, or, hold out until after christmas to see what DX10 has to offer?

If you lot advise me to wait until after crimbo, i'll most likely buy a new screen around september.. which will bring me back to the graphics card being to slow for the new res :p

What to do?
 
I'm in a similar situation, got an old 6800gt which plays bf2 fine just about but will struggle with it once i get my new 19" monitors.

I think the next generation of graphics cards will be dx10?
When will they be out, before the end of the year?

If so i might hold out. I don't like getting next gen stuff when its new tho...
 
i say u get a very cheap x2 3800 and overclock it like mad so it equals your average conroe at stock and get an x1800xt, sell your old cpu and graphics card on ebay and wait until next christmas by then vista will have matured and conroe will be super cheap so then it would be worth getting a dx10 card and a conro or see what AMD has up its sleaves
 
Only ever upgrade your rig when your rig is not giving you the performance you would like.

If you do not know what to upgrade, then it is a waste of money to as everything you do at the moment your rig can cope with. ;)
 
Well my CPU is running fine imo, only got it a few weeks ago. 2.8 on stock voltage, so if i get a new motherboard, i should see past 3ghz so that should be ok to keep for a while.

I do feel that my framerates arn't as good as they could be, for example Hitman BM, and newer games coming out such as prey are getting wee bit of lag.

I think i may upgrade the graphics card, and stick it in a conroe rig around christmas and save for a DX10 card?
