Hi,

I hope someone can help, since the frequency of this problem is increasing.

The Problem :

I get random system lock-ups on desktop. Task manager is unavailable, and the only way to sort it out is to restart the computer.

Things I have tried :

Going from 13.12 AMD drivers to 14.4, and now 14.6 beta. I think I might try 13.12 again.

Setting cpu clocks back to stock, as at first I thought it was an unstable overclock.

Updating my motherboard bios from F18 to F21, F22 and F23b. I'm currently using F21.

Running memtest (twice) for many hours, but no fault found.

System Specs :

3570K @ stock.

Asus 7970 Matrix Platninum @ 1100 / 1650.

8gb ddr3 ram @ 1600mhz.

Z77-D3H Gigabyte motherboard.

Can anyone shed any light on this? Ta.

Hi RJC,

I'm using a BeQuiet! 650w.

I haven't used something like Prime for a long time. That's cpu intensive software, isn't it?

what make model of memory? im using a gigabyte z77 and powercolour 7970 latest 14.6 beta and no issues here

with stock clocks id suggest manually setting cpu voltage response to fast and pwm phase control to extreme performance and a manual bclk of 100 in the bios it helps with stability

also set the power control in ccc to 20% for your 7970 if you havnt already

Hey Wazza300,

The ram is Patriot, though off the top of my head I can't remember what model.

I'll go into the bios and select those settings you mentioned.

Yes, the power control is set to 20%.

Ok, so I have set the following :

Cpu voltage response = fast.

Pwm phase control = extreme performance.

BCLK = 100.11 / 12 (was already set to that number, so I didn't alter it).

Dram voltage = 1.55v (1.55 selected, though it sets it to 1.560v).

I'll see how things go and report back at some point. Thanks for the help thus far. :)

Of course, I could be wrong but I don't think the psu is at fault. The problem doesn't occur when I'm gaming, and it is a relatively new power supply (matter of months old). Also, if it was the cause, wouldn't it just not boot at all?

@ Andygully - no, I haven't got any yellow markers in device manager, but yes, I've read about confiction with video drivers / graphics cards, etc. Are you using the original bios, or have you updated it?

@ Nikumba - that's something I haven't thought of. I'll keep an eye on that over the next few days or so.

I had some very similar issues after I installed the AMD Drivers for the Tri-X I had a couple of weeks back , PC was slow freezing up sluggish, glitching and so on.....after I got rid of both the card and the Drivers...no more issues

Did you get a replacement card (another 290)?

Edit : ah, I see that you're going from a 760 to a 780. :)

It may sound like a stupid question but can you think of when it started, was it after a new hardware or software install or did it just start out of the blue.
Another silly suggestion are you sure its hardware related, make sure your antivirus is up to date and run a scan, run MBAM and if Task Manager is unavailable after the event have it running on your desktop the whole time and when it locks up it should show cpu/memory usage at the time of lockup on screen.

That's a good question. Unfortunately, I can't be spot on about when it started, though I'm certain it was when I got this motherboard. I'm starting to think that it doesn't like my graphics card, as I don't recall having this issue when I was using a GTX480 / 570 (I've even read about AMD driver conflictions with this motherboard).

What is MBAM?

Well, I've just used DDU for the first time; it's quite a nice thought about starting over afresh. :) I'll see how things go and report back again.

no I wouldn't thinkso, you have to use same make model bios for your board, there is also modded bios's with latest roms/drivers for the z77 d3h

Well, so far so good. The problem has only made an appearance once in the last few days (#19), so it would seem that all is ok. I'll continue to update if things go awry / find improvements, etc. Hopefully, this thread will help others to iron out any issues too. Thanks very much to everyone that commented, especially Wazza.

The next thing I need to do is to look into pushing my cpu more. :)

I'm not sure if this is directly related, but over the last few days I've had the mouse freeze, and the only way to do anything is to reset the pc. Again, I think this is an issue when watching a video on youtube. Just tried updating the bios to the latest (that I'm aware of) version : 23b. Why it resets to IDE mode, I've no idea. Set to ACHI, and all proceeded as expected.
